figured it out. the clutch cycling switch was bad. jumped the switch to get the clutch to engage which inturn drew the freon into the system. replaced the switch for $12. the shop was trying to rip me off for some labor on a easy fix.

sometimes, people at shops just dont quite know what theyre dong, and rather than having the balls to admit it, they start throwing parts at it. its understandable why they thought the clutch was bad when it was th l/p switch, but a good a/c technician would have better troubleshot it and figured it out. sorry bout your expenses there to find out.
