if the rings are bad oil would be on the tip of the spark plug that is sitting in the cylinder ( the part that jumps the spark ) , if you got oil on the socket and the top of the plug that the wire goes on then it is a valve cover leak

yea couldnt happen any other way. and even if you inspected the gasket they still can have small leaks. did you clean the oil off of the spark plug boot? is it back?

What I did was replace the valve cover gasket, clean the spark plugs clear of any oil residue (or just flat out replace them if need be), reinstall the plugs, and boots, run the car for awhile then see if there's any oil on the firing element (the "tip" if you will) of the spark plug... if there is, and you're certain you put the gasket on correctly, then you've probably got yourself a bad piston ring. If there's no sign of oil, then obviously it was the gasket and vuala problem solved.
