clutch will not release, need help

Hello, first time here. I hope someone here can help. I have a 98 GT with a T-45 trans in the shop that came in with excessive clutch pedal free play and the throwout bearing in pieces. Trans would shift fine into all gears with the engine off, but not with the engine running. I replaced the flywheel, pilot & throwout bearings, clutch disk and pressure plate. Flywheel, disk and pressure plate looked OK for 98k miles. A few hot spots, but no cracks or warping noted. After reassembly, the shifting problem was still present. A few people I talked to suggested that the self-adjuster assembly might be bad. I went ahead and replaced the adjuster and cable also. Still no fix. The service manager showed up with an adjustable cable that we installed. This will fix the problem if I really crank down on the cable, but if you bump the clutch pedal upward, it will release the self-adjuster pawl and lose the adjustment. The travel on the clutch fork is .919 inches and a Cobra I checked has almost 1.25 inches of clutch fork travel. The clutch fork and pivot ball looked good with minamal wear noted, and the firewall is not flexing. Any input on why this horse will not self adjust to spec. The adjustable cable is in my opinion, a crutch to fix a problem that is still present and not fixed. Thank you for any help offered.
