Tranny Rebuild or New One?
alright so i was talking to a tranny shop and i told them that i might want a rebuild on my tranny (4R70W). they said that it'll start around $1600 just for the soft parts and labor and torque converter rebuild. so that got me wondering, would it be better just to buy one from like Performance Automatic or get mine rebuilt?

Are you after performance or after a good solid transmission?
I do these transmissions and offer things that can help you out with whatever you need pretty much any way you want to go. Let me know if you want to talk to see what I have to offer. In regards to a manual swap, there is a time and a place for it. It can be very expensive and you forgot to mention that you would need the wiring, a lot of labor and either a different computer or a tune to shut off the automatic functions in yours. You can use an automatic computer in a manual car by doing that, but you cant use a manual computer with an automatic. Anyone wanting to do that swap either direction is usually better off getting a donor car or finding someone that wants to trade. But, if you want your car to be quicker and not spend as much money, then a manual swap isn't the way to do it for sure. The right automatic transmission and torque converter will really surprise you. As I mentioned above, there is a definite place for a manual transmission. A manual can be a hell of a lot of fun to drive and is definitely better for a road race car, but when it comes to daily driving and straight line then the automatics have it wrapped. Actually, I am involved in a lot of manual to automatic swaps for people that have found that their manual transmission can't do what they need. As a matter of fact, if you turn to page 168 of the January 08 Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, you will see one of my transmission setups and the details of the installation into a Cobra. Again, let me know if you want to discuss anything. I would be more than happy to help you out if I can. Darrin |
