Getting A PI Motor

Hey,

So my friend finally went and picked up his motor from the shop it was at, and he's gonna give it to me for $100. It was in his 02 stang, but he lt his friend drive it who over-revved it (or so he speculates). He said it still fires up, but it's got a loud knocking noise and no oil pressure
He says he guesses it's a spun rod bearing. Does this sound like what it might be?

I was thinking I was going to take the heads and cams off and put them on my car ($100 pi swap! wohoo!). Should I get the heads checked first?

Also, another idea hit me... how hard would it be to fix this engine and put it in my car? It has 70,000 miles one it, where mine has 110,000. Would it be worth it?

Thanks
-Humjaba

Sounds good. I posted up on this before; should I leave the cams on the heads when I take them off? I've been told I should get them inspected (which means the cams and valves will have to come off). What do you guys think?

Really wont matter, just make sure when you take the cam (cradles?) covers/ bolts out to keep them in order. Other than that, u will still have to align the timing up on the timing chains and the gears. And if your doing a whole head swap, it requires you to take the timing components off, meaning that the cams will have to be set up right anyway. And yes i would get them at least looked at and acid dropped to clean them. And personally PI swap isnt enough for me, Im getting my worked by boomer with custom bumpsticks speced by him too.

Yeah, well not all of us want to blow all our money on our cars I have $4k in the bank...

i could wait for nes to sell his powerdyne for $1100 or whatever... pi swap plus this and a decent tune, plus gears, suspension, gauges and still have some left over. but i need this dough for college

now i just gotta find a good place to do all this. any machine shop should be able to do it, right?

Yeah machine shops should be able to do it fine. Personally I would never put a powerdyne on my car. They are so inefficent, its like using a leaf blower IMO.

And well i have over 4K in my savings, and over 2 in my checking. Every part that i buy i match in the checking account, so thats how i save half my money. Fortunately i have college taken care of.

So I picked up that engine I was talking about a while ago. 2002 PI 4.6 with 72k miles. For $100. He thinks it spun a bearing- when he fires it up, it idles fine, but when he revs there's a slight knocking/ticking sound. He said the oil was a little silver-ish but there wasn't any metal in it or anything. So now the fun begins for me and the rest of my PI swap

If anyone needs any parts off it, let me know. I'll be parting out the pieces I don't use/need.

Why part it out ? I would fix it. You never know what it is. Even if its a spun bearing. Cheap fix. I would say possibly oil pump or chain guide, but you said its not noisey at idle. It could be a bearing, rods are weak but would be noisey all the time. Good luck to what ever you do.

Well a friend took his car out and drove it... It was fine before, came back with the problem. He most likely was racing someone and over-revved it.

Would an oil pump cause the noise problem? Because he said once it warms up there's no oil pressure either... Or something like that...

I'll tear it apart and take pictures and whatnot. I don't know what to look for though

Edit: Plus, it's not really any good when the heads and cams are in my car That is, unless I sell it when it's fixed. Then I can just buy some other ones.

yeah first remove the valve covers, then all the pulleys on the front including the crank pulley. Then remove the front cover and that will take out alot of possibilitys. You will see alot of carnage or nothing at all.

Got it out of the truck and on the ground (it put up a bit of fight though... ) so I'll probably get to tearing it apart this weekend. He said there were no metal shards in the oil when he checked it (hasn't been drained yet) so hopefully I'll see nothing.

Make sure you get the proper parts list before you star tearing down your working motor.

Looks good.
