Check Engine Light?

So two days ago, I started my car in the cold, and the check engine light came on immediately. I ( like a dumbass) opened the hood for a visual inspection, but everything seemed fine.

I drive about 20 miles across town to visit my girl, and the temp gauge was still at the C. Then all of a sudden, it pops up to about the R.

Today, i had my heater on, and it started to smell pretty weird, and it was coming from the vents, and then it disappeared.

Then tonight, after it sat all day, and was cold once again, the Check engine light was off when i drove it, and it stayed off the whole way home.

I'm guessing i need a new thermostat, and a new idler pulley for sure, and my IAC is dirty, but none of those things should cause the Check engine light to come on?

Maybe it was the thermostat, and the Engine Coolant temp sensor saw something was wrong.

I didn't get a chance to get the codes read, so im not sure what they say.

And help guys?

Thanks

The IAC will cause a check engine light. it will come up as an Idle Air Speed Control DTC. It happens to me every now and then, but thats just an option. As far as the other stuff, i have no clue man. Good luck

more than likely you have a p0125. the light will come on for a bad thermostat. Get the code checked and i can help more. If you do find you have a p0125, replace the thermostat and gasket.

I just replaced my gasket because mine was leaking, but my heater no longer smells funny. Just food for thought.
