so i'm confused... if i remove the heads and cams from one engine (in one piece) and put them in another, the ford tool doesn't do me a bit of good does it? don't i have to manually turn the crank so it's in safe mode, and then put the heads on and attach the chain when the cam timing mark is at the top?

ugh so confusing x.x

Ford Tool will do nothing for you. You have to align the marks on the chains.

Uncle Humjabaso i'm confused

Swapping heads and cams from one car to another is very simple. Just put the motor youre swapping to top dea center and they will line up with the marks. Put youre motor to top dead center and then remove the bolt off the cam gear and remove. Then you can just swap them out and not touch anything. Everyone on this site has difference ways they "think" will work. So yeah youre right everything you hear is going to be very confusing. For you it will be a simple task and once you start ripping into the motor you have out of the car you will learn more about the one thats in the car.

i'm looking into buying some pi cams from this guy locally. the cams are out of an 04' gt with 70k miles. what will i need to install these in my 98?
technicnally to do everything right and correct you will need "2" for tools. Not that anyone would mention them to you because they probably used a screwdriver or something else that may break things. But you will need to find someway to remove the hydraulic rockers from under the cam. Then you will need to wedge the oil timing tensioner. It puts tension on the chain so it doesnt move, when you use the wedge ( 100.00 tool in the link ) youre putting a positive tension on the tensioner and giving you slack on the chain while still not allowing it to move from the crank gear. Now you can remove the cam bolt and have no tension on the gear so you can remove it easier. SLide it off and ask the person youre buying the PI cams from if he would also give you the bolts. some will some use for thier new cams. Either way you need 04 cam bolts. Now thats done, you can remove youre cams and swap them out. The romeo ( 04 ) cams have a special slot on them so they only fit one way in the gear. Put the gear back on and use threadlock on the cam bolt and put it back in. You dont really need valve cover gaskets, but you will need some kind of oil resistant silicone for the 2 spots on the head/front cover. Even before you put the covers back on you wanna spin the motor over looking for a hard spot, if you have one something went wrong. But most the time you will beable to spin it over without problems doing it this way. good luck. I like seeing pictures of things before i do them and not everytime i have this at my disposal. But just look in this section for the stickys, they help alot. I used some good pics and tried to describe everything to a tee.

You cant use those bolts, unless they are new in package. The bolts are TTY.

If necessary, install Cam Positioning Tool Adapters 303-413 (T92P-6256-A) and Cam Positioning Tool 303-380 (T91P-6256-A) on flats of camshaft and install camshaft sprocket spacer (6265) and camshaft sprocket (6256) . Install bolt and washer and tighten to 110-130 Nm (82-95 lb-ft).
