this code is set when the pcm comands the pump on durring self test and it looks for the 02's to go lean with the extra air pumped in by the pump. If it doesn't see the change, the code is set. It can be caused by the pump or controller, or a problem with the 02 sensors.

take care, John

replace the pump. more than likely it's dead from water intrusion. Remove the pump from the pass side fender area underneath and hotwire it to a battery. betcha it doesn't run.

mine died a long time ago from the same thing, here is what it looks like... i just deleted mine, you will still throw a code or two but can get the CEL turned off with a custom tune. i think ford wanted like 180 for replacement pump when mine went

Thats it alright. It usually injests water and locks up and usually takes out the electronic relay/controller as well. Both pieces end up setting U back about 300-400$ + labor and diagnosis.

I guess I will take my otc diagnostic moniter as a copilot for awhile to reset the mil. does the mil affect performance in any way?

It should not hurt performance. Air being pumped into the exhaust is to help the convertors to be more efficient. Just remember that someone down the road will have to pay the price for not trying to keep the air clean. I have nothing against improving performance, but please keep the emissions as clean as possible.

take care, John C

it pumps air into your exhaust manifolds 0-120 seconds after startup to help burn up left over hydrocarbons, sometimes at idle it will activate too. this is also called the california emission's package or secondary air ijection. one of the bearings also went in my pump causing a loud tapping noise too, rather annoying... you would think with as many people that had them go bad ford would of recalled them or issued a tsb?
