speedo gear

So i put my new speedo gear in today because i went from 3:31's to 4:10's, and my speedo is still off. Did i do something wrong? I bought the white 23 tooth manual trans. 4:10 gear from steeda. I would say my speedo is about 10mph off. This thing is really pissing me off. Any clue?

it will never be 100%, you could try a speedcal to get it more accurate. but its mechanical so its never going to be exact.

If i pay money for something, i would like it to be a little more accurate than 10-15 off! Once the point of even selling them if they are wrong? Whats a speedcal?

Speed cal is sold by Dallas mustang. It takes the stock gear, and then minupluates the resistance on the VSS. That way it will correct for any gear ratio or tire profile.

yea, matt told me that those gears aren't accurate because they work for 373's and 410's so theres some variation. I leave mine as is at ten over.

There's no mechanical correction you can do on a 96-98 5-spd. car and be accurate with any gearset higher than 3.55 unless you replace the drive gear on the tailshaft housing inside the trans. The 23-tooth gear you put in there will shred, they always do, and yours won't be any different. The easiest solution is definitely the SpeedCal and it will be 100% accurate if installed correctly. Go back to your stock VSS gear and adjust the SpeedCal accordingly.

Thanks. drgnracin invited me a little over a year ago but I haven't checked in for quite some time. I've been up and down all possible sides of the speedo issue with my 98 car and thought I'd pass along what I'd learned.
