Lifting a Mustang (Cobra)

Vehicle is a 96 svt cobra with steeda stage 3 kit. (Sport springs, shocks, sway bars, rear control arms, subframe and cross brace).

Objective is to restore the original ride height, or maybe a little higher than stock to get more suspension travel and ground clearance as it's mission has changed. We would like to off road (back roads mostly, some dirt) just a little bit and the car is way too low as is. Sort of a rally stang...kindy cherry 2000 ish.

My question is what spring and shock combination will give us the tallest ride height and the most suspension travel. All the springs I keep finding while searching indicate they will lower the car.

I have already ordered adjustable rear control arms and stock GT springs for the rear. I am considering the coil over conversion and k member with lowers.

Anyone know where to get struts/shocks that are 1/2 - 1" longer when extended.

a Cobra isnt going to be the best off road car for ya. RWD + TQ + Dirt = a lot of spinning. if you want a dirt/rally style car go for a AWD EVO, STI, etc etc

welcome to the form btw

Thanks for the heads up and warm welcome 97. I have already commited to the project. Its a sweet ride, runs great and is paid for. I know it won't win or even compete with the awd type rally vehicles, but I bet it will make me smile my ass off.

So.....does anyone know of any struts/shocks that are a tad longer, or am I on my own here? :-(

well then for the set up you want your probly going to have to call around and find a suspension shop like eibach, intrax, granitell and just call them to see what they have that would work. but If im thinking right your best bet would be just getting some adjustable coil overs and adj. struts n shocks for it and setting them high and set the struts firm... that should get you what your looking for... and good thing bout that is if you dont want it higher n e more just adj em!

I talked to Eibach last week and they wern't much help, sort of annoying really. I was inquiring about thier drag spring coil length and weight transfer/articulation. All the guy said is that it would not work. MM and Granitelli shared some great information and provided me with some good options. I ordered their adjustable lowers and factory GT springs for the rear. May go with their torque arms as well, gotta see how it works with that first. Already have steeda subframe connectors with cross braces welded in place.

As far as handling goes....It's mission will be a daily driver for bad back roads when the weather is too bad for me to ride my motorcycle. I have very few curves in miami and hauling ass on the back roads allows me to bypass traffic. I need a compliant suspension to smooth out back roads, not to handle in the twisties. My daily driver bike has a long travel suspension and tons of torque, and as an adventurer bike it really makes short work out of long bad roads.

I'm just joking with you, but I don't really understand what you are trying to accomplish here. It seems like you don't really have a good plan for this car.

The plan is to build a back road blaster out of my cobra. As it sits right now with the steeda stage 3 suspension, it is not fun to drive. It rides like a tank and scrubbs every speed bump in town. I want a suspension that uses all of it's travel. I know this goes against the grain of the members here...and the cobra population in general, but that is the destiny of this cobra.

The bike I ride gobbles up crappy roads every day.

I want the cobra to gobble up crappy roads as well....kinda like this:
