Ford 460 Into My 98 GT

So as you read in the subject, that is my plan. Buying a Ford Big Block 460 from Ford Racing. I would like to put it into my 1998 mustang GT, someone told me that i will have to do alot of cuttin but that i dont mind. someone else told me that my k-member would have to go tubular, which im guessin 94-95 gt's got cause he told me i needed that or either a 94-95 gt, anyone wanna explain why i need to go tubular, please ? Anyone else got anymore suggestions for me and most important is it possible ? 460 into my 98 gt. It costs $6,700 btw, sounds good to me.

Yes it is possible and will fit nicely. Your major clearance issue will be the hood. I strongly suggest a tubular K-member because it will shave 40+ pounds off the front and will give a ton more clearance for headers. Kooks makes some nice headers for the swap. You will need a C6, Powerglide, TH350 or TH400 transmission. I suggest a Chevy TH350 or TH400 because the Ford C6 is heavy junk. Anthony Jones (AJE) makes some of the nicest K-members on the market and they also make trans crossmembers for GM transmissions.

well then i guess i will have to cut the hood to make room or find one, but that should be no problem. About the tubular K-member, how hard is it to put one in my car ? About gettin a chevy tranny I dont really like the sound of that, u sure there isnt anythin better ? Can you please give me the websites to kooks, AJE for the t. k-member, and maybe one that has hoods for this swap, any website you can give me of these or other things would be greatly appreciated. what would be the best gears for a 460 , 4.10s ?

Get a taller aftermarket hood and you should be fine. K-members are fairly easy to install. That's fine if you don't like Chevy transmissions. Use a C6 then. If you want to do things the hard way, you can deal with it. The Chevy TH350 and TH400 are far superior to the Ford C6 which is why everyone is using them as well as the Chevy Powerglide transmission. 4.10s would work good with the rpm range of that engine.

Only cutting involved is the need to trim the mounting flange for the rt rear k-member slightly for header clearance. I also had to remove the frt sway bar frame mounting pads for header clearance. Hood clearance depends on what intake & carb you use. Take a look at the subframe spacers from Bob at www.fordifiedracing.com. They lower the subframe 1-1/2" and improve clearance and help with hood height. On my fox, using the frpp mounts and the fordified spacers, I can get a victor intake, 1" n2o plate and a holley carb under a 4" cowl. Ck out my coupe in my garage or it's also the ride of the month on the main page.

You can get a TH400 anywhere. Parts are cheap. I'd find a reputable builder and have one build for your needs. No matter what trans you get you will need either a new one or a rebuilt unit. I'd steer away from the Powerglide at this point because they work well with power adder engines but not as well with naturally aspirated engines. The best place for a Powerglide is a high horsepower light weight car. A 350 or 400 will work much better. You could do a C6 if you are stuck on using Ford parts in a Ford car but it is heavy, bulky, sucks alot of horsepower and will probably require the same amount if not more fabrication to fit in the car.

I'd call AJE and ask them about the trans crossmember. The K-member you will need will either be MU-3010 or MU-3110 depending on whether or not you want mild steel or chromoly. Chromoly is stronger and lighter but costs $120 more. Or you can do like Twist2go mentioned with the stock k-member.

Be prepared for the snowball.... It all snowballs from here. Soon you will need a roll cage, stronger axles, chassis parts, etc. Drag racing is a disease only cured by poverty.

A C4 would be a better choice. Even with a GM trans, a stock double hump crossmember works. The ground clearance for the headers is much better w/ a c4 as they can be tucked up into the trans tunnel slightly whereas a pg or a c6 require them to hang lower due to the fact of such a wide trans is being used. When I built my coupe I concentrated on building it as light as I could and built a midrange and top end motor to try and kill soem of the low end torque. Sure I gave up some torque down low but even so, lack of torque is not a problem.

no, a stock double hump crossmember works on either trans. Contact Bob at D&D for all the swap info and parts. There are many, many options.

This is a really good write up of a guy I know that has a 96GT with a 460.

Just expect some serious down time man.Even with all the cash in the world.

Do you have a C4 in your car Rick? How does it hold up behind a big block? I know my PA trans needs to be refreshened often and I have a low torque small block. As much as I like Ford, I'm the first to admit that they failed miserably in the transmission department. I have yet to find anyone that makes good horsepower that is happy with Ford transmissions. I have seen alot of guys run C4s behind big blocks in race cars though. The 351M bellhousing is what you need to bolt the trans to a 385 series engine.
