New to the 4.6 Scene with ?'s

Alright I just bought a 1997 Mustang GT and its already got some mods on it but I want to swap out engines ones this 4.6 dies (if it ever does). Here's a list of the mods if anyones interested: Pro-5.0 Short Shifter, Hypertech Computer, CAI, 3:73 gears, Aeromotive high-flow fuel pump, UD Pullies, 255-45-17 Rear tires, 225-45-17 in front, Magnaflow Catback and maybe 24 lb injectors (not sure yet). I want to find a 4.6 Shortblock that came outta a 96-98 GT but I want to put either PI DOHC Heads on it and the PI Intake. Is this combo possible without mods??? Like I said Im new so I dont know if I can take a stock 4.6 and do a PI conversion with little to no mods.... Help me out guys

Well there are other guys on this board who know more and can help you more then me but il tell ya what i know. your car sounds like its got a good start of mods to it. iv got most of those an more on my 96, but as far as the PI thing... 96-98 4.6s are NON PI for 99+ ford changed the intake manifold and heads and called the Performance Improved (PI). your car has the non PI set up. you dont realy need any special mods to do the PI swap. the full swap includes the intake manifold and heads. and you could do it to your car the way it is, you dont need a new block, infact you could do it to a bone stock car. as far as going DOHC...youve got a SOHC motor and so does all the other GTs, the DOHCs are in the cobras and if you want that id jsut swap the whole thing. the DOHC cobra motors dont have all the PI/NON PI crap to deal with. if i were you id stick with your block and put PI heads and intake on it and go from there. theres tons of posts on here about doing the whole swap just take a look around and im sure you can find one. hope thats some help to ya.

The DOHC never had a PI set of heads...

PI = Power Improved = ONLY FOR SOHC 2V

You can do the PI swap with a set of 2V PI Heads easily...You need a set of PI heads, PI Intake, and some small other pieces...You can buy kits to do the swap from alot of places...

To put a DOHC 4V in your car you are going to have to do alittle more then just swapping heads...

Ok I wanted to a DOHC swap but I think ill wait till later for that. So here's what Im thinking about doing. Ill gather up the PI intake and heads and get new cams for the heads so I can get a little more power outta the heads and Ill probably get them ported as well. Then once I got all the parts to do the swap Ill pull the car in the garage and swap er out in one weekend. Can anyone point me in the direction of the swap??

If I were you I'd skip the heads and just do the P.I intake and cams, the heads are far overrated and are not worth 5-10 rwhp as the intake and cams together are worth 30-40 rwhp. Do not fall for the P.I heads are a must as the increase in power from the is mainly due to the compression bump. If you were to look at stock flow numbers for both heads they are nearly the same less than a 4% difference in flow stock accross the board. The P.I heads have a much better flow down low but up top they do not carry the port velocity the npis do and begin to stall around .300" lift . If you were to have your N.P.I heads with the larger P.I valves you would see the N.P.I walk the dog over stock P.I heads.

So I should stay with the NPI heads. Maybe ill get a set of NPI heads and prt them out so they flow a little better. Whats the max lift i could go with stock heads

Do not attempt to port any 2v head yourself, unless you have done them before you will probably lose mre power than you'll gain. As far as lift I would go no bigger than the P.I cams on the n.p.i unless you machine the spring perch and run the P.I. style spring.
