gear to mpg ratio?

How bad will 4:10 gears hurt my gas milage? It will be a long time before I ever get to put some forced air on it so I want that off the line power. So how much am I sacrificing?

honestly i didnt even feel a damn thing
prob because i used to like to wind out my gears
but now that i know i have 4.10s i know i get more sucky gas mileage
so i shift straight to fourth from first lol
and i think my gas mileage is better now lol hahaha
all im trying to say is it depends on how you drive lol

plus you buy a mustang knowing that its a v8 and your gonna get bad mpg
so why not go big or go home lol

my advice

go for it

There's a massive sticky going on explaining this issue and the fact is there is very little to no loss in gas mileage. Some people say and swear that they actually have increased gas mileage. Where you're losing the mileage is here: 4.10s are 1. Really Fun and 2. So fun that winding high into the gear is no longer a hard effort nor does it take 80mph in first to hear the motor at high RPM.

I personally have a 4.10 and the car is still abysmal on gas. 15-16.5MPG in the city. Not very efficient, but on the highway I'm actually fine. My gas mileage never really changed, and I don't think it went down. What a 4.10 has done to me, along with rising gas prices is the gear makes me shift quicker. 3,000 RPM is "winding" it on city driving to me and I often go 1>3>5 or even more extreme. I just use one gear, get to my speed and plop it into the highest feasible gear. Hell, the car doesn't stall out at 25MPH in 5th, but it also doesn't sound good or move anywhere either. What I'm saying is this: I'm concious on the fact that I can annihilate my gas mileage at will so I don't. America is feeling the gas prices. They're making us all more aware of our fuel economy but if we're driving Mustangs and not trading them in then we've chosen our own consequence, in our gas, money out of our pockets to enjoy one hell-of-a-car versus putting around in a Honda Fit while a slushbox takes us through the gears and through a gas station car wash.

Keep your damn boat anchor off the gas pedal and your gas milage won't sink faster than the Titanic. Don't waste your time with 3.73 or 3.90, go 4.10 or don't spend the money at all if you're naturally aspirated.

Here's a link discussing the issue on gas mileage with a 3.73 versus 4.10:
Difference in Gas Mileage Between 3.73 and 4.10's

Here's a link explaining RPMs done very nicely by TheBusher:
3.27 vs 3.73 vs 4.10 (took a couple hrs 2 complete... enjoy)

Dude, you don't buy a mustang and start modding it if you are worried about the gas milage. That's what ricers are for.

I am not sure if it will be the same on a New Edge car, but I have 4.10's in my S197, and they have not changed my mpg under normal driving at all.
