Knocking sound. I doubt it's detonation.

Well I haven't been able to drive my car for a while since tearing my Achilles. Today my wife took it up to get inspected and everything was fine. She left there and there was a knock at idle. I got home from work and we went out to the car and started it up. I got down beside each side on the ground to see if I could tell if they knocked my x-pipe loose. The knock sounds like it is either coming from the exhaust or the back bottom of the motor.

I doubt it is detonation because it only happens at idle. Also the car has not been driven hard at all for at least two months. Right after I got hurt my wife had to get the oil changed for me also and due to my dip stick not being able to read oil level I think the place may have overfilled the oil. Would this be a possible cause of the knock?

Sorry for the long post. Knowledge is greatly appreciated as I am still too injured to work on the car myself and she is taking it back to the inspection shop to look at it tomorrow.

Thanks,
Chad

Could be from over filled oil, but what type of knocking? Pinging is normally the sound from dettionaation and its normally under a load. an exhaust leak would go with RPM as would a bearing typically. Im lost dude.

Most places know how much oil to put in. Even if people dont have dipsticks. But if you dont trust them, just go back and ask the service manager to pull the work order and see how many qt's they billed you.

Also, depending on how long you let it sit...may have a dry lash adjuster. Ive seen it before.

Also could be a dry throw out bearing. Not being near the car i cant exactly help much. but its a start.

Thanks guys.

It actually doesn't sit at all. My wife drives it about half a mile everyday and it just started doing this after the inspection. We talked to the manager and she is going to go by there while I'm at work tomorrow for him to take a look at it.

If that doesn't work I'll make a video of it to get a sound clip. It's not a pinging and it is coming from under car the near the back of the motor/mid pipe area. I had the hood open and couldn't hear anything abnormal there.

I'll keep you posted tomorrow on what he tells us.

Thanks for your time guys.

Well I figured out what it is and it is kind of a relief. Way better than motor issues for sure.

My Bassani cat on the driver's side of the x-pipe has gone bad. The honey comb inside of it is what is knocking. The guy was very cool and took a hammer and tapped on it to show my wife that it was definitely the sound.

So now I either have to get an off-road H, a new cat welded up, or live with the noise. I'm not too big on the idea of switching mid pipes for inspections but I'll see once I start driving it again.

Thanks again for your time guys.
