Exhaust

I have a off-road h pipe right now but i need to pass inspection so i was looking at catted x pipes. If i get a catted x with only two cats on it, it will pass inspection right, and how much will it change the sound(quieter, louder, raspier, etc).

it will pass with only 2 cats....and it all depends on the type of cat it is whether or not the sound will be dampened. but you WILL hear a decrease in volume in general with any type of cats on.

On my 97 Cobra I put on a Bassani Catted X pipe (2 less cats then stock) and it gives the stock cat-back a little more growl but not really much louder. And it was no problem at inspection. Just recently I put on a Magnaflow Cat back, awesome combo with the Bassani fyi, BIG difference in sound.

I wouldn't recommend lm1's with any x-pipe. It will sound ricey as hell. I recommend mac flow path, or possibly borla stingers

I think it sounds awesome with the slp x and lm1 and the upr x is pretty much the same, and what do u mean it sounds ricey i think any exhaust on our car is far from ricey.

x pipe's have more of a pitchy import sound. H pipes have more of a throaty growl. both perform excellent. most of your sound is gonna come from your cat back anyway.

All parts of your exaust make a difference to your sound. The Catback makes the biggest difference since it has the mufflers in it. X pipes make better hp, less torque, higher pitched sound than the H. Catted Vs. Non-Catted won't affect power untill you are pushing about 400HP. A mid pipe will amplify your sound a noticeable amount, but your stock mufflers will still keep it fairly quiet. I used to have LT headers, Catted H and a stock catback. It sounded good, but still fairly quiet. I put on a Mac 2.5" chambered Cat and it sounded awesome. But I had to swap the Catback for a Dump due to a panhard bar. The Dumps are really loud. I don't like them for daily driving due to the noise, but I unfortunately don't have a choice.

I figured this would be easier and more "efficient" than creating a new thread on exhausts, so here's my question about my exhaust system.

I currently have a completely stock exhaust system except for the mufflers which are both Flowmasters. (guy before put em on) My GT sounds okay, it's definitely louder than a stck GT but not by alot. And I definitely want the sound to be louder and I want better airflow. So I have been looking at getting SLP X-Pipes but I don't know if I should get shorty pipes or not? I don't plan on changing the headers for awhile but I do want to put a new Catback system on it, like the LM I's.

Is it a good idea to put the SLP Midpipe and Catbacks with stock headers? Please let me know, I basically just want better airflow and a louder/deeper sound from my exhaust. (Meaning I don't want the V6 Camaro next door to my apartment to be louder than my V8 GT) Thanks for the help.

SLP Midpipe and a catback will be plenty loud. I'm not sure if your are specifiying a SLP catback, but if you choose that route, it will be damn loud, and you'll love it. Even with stock headers, it will be plenty loud.

Do I need the SLP shorty pipe or the longer one? Also should I go Hpipe or X?

ebo...youre in PA right? well i am too. they don't do visual inspection on cats. people think they do, but they don't. you just need to PASS emissions. MIL eliminators on an o/r mid pipe and you're good to go. the only thing is though that MIL eliminators are nearly friggin' impossible to find. you're best bet is ebay.

Is the only reason a shorty is cheaper because it can't fit the SLP headers without being replaced?

SPETZ, your stock exhaust does not have headers. It has an exhaust manifold. If you are going to keep the stock manifold you would need a midpipe that would bolt to shorty headers. If you are going to replace your stock exhaust manifold with headers I would recomend going with long tubes and a short x pipe.

P.S. It's always better to start your own thread, it's easier to determin who's question is being answered.
