Puttin In A New Tranny!

I've gotta 97 GT and i lost 5th gear saturday. So I went and bought a transmission out of a 99 Cobra and I was wondering what I would have to do to get it in there. i know I have to drill two new holes in the crossmember but what else will I have to do??

you may have an issue with the with the driveshaft, the factory t45 i belive is a 28 spline input shaft. Check to make sure that the 99 cobra is same

when i purchased my 97 cobra the trans had one from a 98 mustang.the prior owner cobbled it with 2 pipes and a couple of threaded rods, not a good fix, I unbolted the crossframe mounts from the body and remounted the cross frame to the trans and jacked the trans up into the car and put the crossframe mounts back on and marked where the new holes should go and drilled them and it was a lot better fix.my mounts had to be moved about 4 inches ,I guess every other location was the same but the prior owner did cut the hangers for the exhaust but he might have did that installing the bbk catted crosspipe. good luck, from the rebuild of the trans the cobra trans uses the same rebuild parts and i think i now have a 98 gt trans in my car.the only difference i noted was one spacer in the trans and the location of where the crossframe bolts up, watch out for other tremec variations in your swap but a t45 is a t45 and borgwarner is tremec i guess.

the spedo might be different because on my 98 cobra i cannot program the speedo and around 99 you can.

my secret place to find part differences is online autozone or online checker ect. look up your car part and take down the part # and then look up the car the trans is out of and see if the #rs match.works most of the time for me and saves lots of trips to the junkyard. not sure about the driveshaft length because the car had the trans already in it.also try ebay, they sell those trans on there and save the picture to your desktop for both of the trans and switch between the 2 and look for differences, that helped me identifling the trans in my car,I was new to the 4.6 and thought it was a t5,they are really different i found out.

when i bought my cobra i knew it had problems so i took it apart 1st the rear end, then the air conditioning.then the vortech blower because of a bad oil seal then i decided to rebuild the trans because of a bad 4th gear cyncro ,found a lot more cobbled stuff along the way but didnt really know what to buy next, 1 month and 1 week and 1 carpayment later i was smoking the tires off in cobra glory, in other words i had to take it apart to find out what i had first and go from there , the trans more than likely will fit without the driveshaft and you could use your money on a shifter or flowmasters, my rear end project i bought parts ahead of time and learned by the time it was done for a couple hundred more I could have had a 9" instead so dont be hastey. 5th gear is behind the rear cover of your trans by your speedogear and you might be able to fix the trans still in your car, might be a roll pin or something, would be cheaper if it was something easy.all i had to really do is take off the bell housing and put a snapring on and change the syncro after the fact.I guess i over analyzed it.
