Question

Auto Shifts While Racing?

Ok my car is an Auto and I just took it to the track last weekend and it was about 90 outside and I only made 2 passes, first pass I ran 15.7 so I was just wondering should I do the shifting myself or just put it in drive and let it do it itself?...I was shifting it myself, and I was shifting at redline so is that where I should be shifting it at? I know on the street when I shift from 1st too 2nd at redline my tires chirp since I put in the 4.10s...Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I was a bit sad after my little trip to the track.

don't shift it unless you've practiced A LOT and have found out where all the good shift spots were at. there's no need to rev all the way up to redline either, you're not making your power up there in that NPI.

someone correct me if i'm wrong but try to get it to shift when you're around 5200ish RPM. and remember with the stock valve body and no shift kit there will be a slight delay in the shifts if you do them manually.

get a jmod or a b&m shift kit to improve the shifts and it will be stronger

+1 on Rando, if you do manually shift make sure you know where the perfect shift points are

I would leave it in drive...but like what was said earlier w/out any modifications to the valvebody the aod will not shift when you shift it...there will be a slight delay.

Just try letting the tranny do the shifting and see if you get a better time. You will answer your own question that way.

I dont know if its different for a newer car, but I'd say manually shift it. Usually you can hit a better rpm to shift at rather than whatever D might do it at. But my opinion comes from driving my 76 Chevy down the track. That doesnt have overdrive or anything, so I have to manually shift it to nail sweet shift points.
