Mass Air Flow

Almost lost my 98 Mustang GT in a fire!!! I was driving home the other nite, when this guy pulls up beside me and starts yelling to pull over.I did not know why he wanted me to stop, so I did pull over,he comes up to my car, says YOUR CAR IS SMOKING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR, I get out and look, and the exhaust was CHERRY red all the way from the motor to the tail pipes, so I turn the car off,it had gotten so hot the undercoating started dripping off the car!!!
After letting it cool off for an hour, I get the car home, and the exhaust had done it again, so I thought it was the converters stopped up,so next morning I unhook exhaust and start car,and it turns the exhaust manifolds CHERRY red again.
I hook up a scan tool, and have 5 codes (check engine light came on also), oxygen sensors fault, speed sensor, injector pulse to high, mass air flow, and throttle poision sensor. How did this car even run I ask my self ?, So I start looking for the problem, seems the Mass Air Flow meter had gone bad, and caused the injectors to dump to much gas in the exhaust, thats what turned the exhaust Cherry red,and as soon as I replaced the MAF sensor the other problems went away!!!
Im glad this guy was following me to tell me the car was that Hot, or up in flames it would have went, the carpet was smoking when I got stopped also, THAT WAS A CLOSE CALL!!!!

exhaust was super hot? That would indicate way retarded timing/ lean condition.. but non the less glad to hear the car and driver are safe.

Nope, way retarded and rich condition so its shooting still burning fuel into the exhaust. FWIW i brought this up on a tuner forum, and everyone called BS on a failed maf causing this. Maybe something else was wrong?

I wouldnt have belived that the MAF would have caused it to dump all that fuel in the ehxaust, but it did, trust me I seen it!!!!!!

All I did was switch out the MAF,and the car has been running fine for 4 days now,Damn if I know!!!
The car has the MACH cold air kit (5 inch tube) that feeds outside air to the MAF,and it was 53 degrees out that night,so I just dont know!!!1
