Need advice on a Motor

I have a friend down the road from me whos a mechanic that recently did a motor swap on a Lincoln with a 4.6 in it. He said if i come pick it up i can have the old motor for free. it is currently locked up. My question is the motor worth getting or would it be too much of a hassle? Me and my brother love rebuilding and machining so that woudlnt be the issue, its just im afraid would it being seized mean any unrepairable damage? Also would this be a PI motor? he isnt sure on the year due to the car being done a while ago.

thanks

Is it a Mark VIII? If it is DOHC then yes its worth it.

shit if it's free take it apart and check it out.. you can sell accessories and any undamaged parts. It's possible it just cooked some rings or bearings.. all of which can be cleaned up and replaced.

honestly im thinking about rebuild, machine, possibly stroker, P&P heads, i think you get the idea. I was curious if these 4.6's get damaged when seized

You should be able to just tear it apart and rebuild it with a forged rotating assembly and some machine work on the block

The block itself may be fine however the internals may be in bad shape. For free you should take it, the block is worth being free. Send it out to a machine shop to make sure the block is still square and build it from there.

If a modular engine has "ANY" oil starvation, it will show up in the cam journals first. If the engine is locked, the journals are gone and the cams are mostlikly welded there. But thats not to say the block is toast.

k i got ya. Im going to look at it again today to see if its a NPI or PI motor, if its a NPI and the heads are ok, ill prob P&P em, and put in a new set of PI cams. What kind of options do i have as far as the block goes? cna you stroke these motors without hurting them?

5L stroker kits aren't too uncommon. But why toss the short stroke crank? If your going to port the heads and such, it will want to live past 5500 rpm!

The only down fall to these heads are the lack of compression options if you want to stay N/A. And the fact they stop breathing at around 4500rpm's

It's almost stupid of how easy it is to get these heads in the range of the PI heads. I've seen to many times were people will replace the stock intake and cams for the PI intake and cams and be just shy 10rwhp, but be over 20rwtq of the 99-04 stock PI motors. The simplicity of porting a NON-PI head and the gains is surprising. Don't let others tell you any diffrent. Yes more hp and rpm can be had from PI heads....at an expence. Not to mention those guys are your normal everyday followers and get draged by the nose of what a magazine says.
If you want to save money and are intrested in keeping the motor 87 octane, then just port the NON PI heads. Most people give them away and grabbing another set is easy.
Those head cast#'s are typical '95-'97 4.6l heads.

Also if im thinking correctly we could always change the pistons in the motor and bump up the compression...

The modulars are easy rebuilders! You could get the flat top pistons which will bump the compression 1.5 point from the stock 11cc dished pistons. No domes are made for the 2V and are not a good idea.

Well, its up to you then. If you plan on building your engine at some time u might as well start with the one for free so you can build it while ur car is still running
