New here with a couple of questions...

Hi all...

I have a 1998 Convertable, and for the longest time I have wanted to switch out the steering wheel... I just do not like this type, its big and kinda ugly to me, I love the 2005 ones or even the 1998 but not the sand color.... is there any way to swith it out... I have asked some shops and they all said no because of the airbag... also any options withe shifter (its an automatic)

I recently got the outside looking good (colors and faux scoop) so now would like to get the inside a bit more comfy....

Thanks for being here and I a, sure you will be hearing a lot from me...

Brandt

This is JUST my opinion but i wouldnt mess with the steering wheel. The stock ones arent that bad not the nicest thing in the world but it serves its purpose. As for shifters as much as im not a fan of summit check their inventory on B&M Shifters for your auto they have some nice options.

IMO if you goin dickin around painting that material you will figure out that it wasnt a good idea and by then its to late. The paint will come off rather easly special when it gets hot and sun fade.

that is very true about the paint, i had not even thought of that.... and with the paint peeling off it would look much worse... I just do not care for the sand color (its alright on the seats and door panels and interior) but for some reason I just think the steering wheel should be black or at least have a colored tribar w/ pony... but those are just my silly fantasies... again thanks everyone... has anyone done a steering wheel swap? and if so is it difficult (or as the shops around here say even legal)

B (and thanks for the welcomes)

or (as I realize replacing something that ain't broken and will not increase performance might be silly) are there any nice tight fitting coverings... all of my experience with steering wheel covers has always been terrible, but that was way back in the day...

basically I have the exterior looking like i want it, I am fairly satisfied with performance, so now I just want to tweak the interior... and probably tint my windows (is that interior or exterior... hmmm...)

If you just want to change the color to black I would suggest looking around some bone yards for one in good shape that is from a year with the same design. I just changed the one in my 98 Expedition with one off of a 2001 F150 and they only charged me $10 for the wheel. The color is a little darker grey than the original but it also matches other parts of the interior and it leather wrapped which is what I was after.

FR 500 wheel will work... And any wheel will work if you don't want the air bags...

is it a DYI type of thing to replace the wheel? (the only way I am mechanically inclined is I have a few screws loose ) and are there any legalities (massachusetts) about switching out a steering wheel?

thanks

You'll need a steering wheel/crank pulley remover. it's about $18 at any parts store.

I would like to thank everyone for all of their input.... this place is great...

I do not think i have the know-how (or the money to pay someone who does) to switch out the steering wheel... so i will probably just opt for a decent covering (just to get the ring black without messing with the airbag)... so any thoughts on what is good would be welcome...

the other 2 things i would like to get done is smoked or blacked out headlights, but i hear it is extremely illegal in Mass... I like how these look (total replacement) but again do not know the complexities of installation
Amazon.com: 94 95 96 97 98 Ford Mustang Projector Headlights Smoke: Automotive Amazon.com: 94 95 96 97 98 Ford Mustang Projector Headlights Smoke: Automotive

and the last issue i am having is the handle on the inside drivers door (the insert molded thingie with the door pull in it) keeps popping out at the top, is this fixable or is it possible to pop in a black one (so the tan door panel with the black inset) would it look stupid, would it be easy to do and do they cost a lot (for both doors)

I am disabled so getting around hunting down parts is quite difficult... stick me in my car and i can drive, just cannot get in and out to easily... but boy do i love my car...

thanks everyone...

Consoles are pretty easy to replace. I got a black one out of a 98 Cobra to get the better cup holder setup and I used it with the parchment lid off of the original to give me the 2 tone look.

cool... that was actually what i was thinking... esp if i can switch out the door inserts and then the console, that way the black coming down from the top of the dash into the middle ac/radio area continuing into the console would really look cool... no issues with the convertible switch or the extra power plug on the bin area?

thanks
