Need real answers for 98 GT fuel pump replacement

I've searched and asked several individuals about which fuel pump to use on my 98 GT. Some say use the 255 Walbro "works fine" and some say it'll burn up in a year. I'm thinking there are no real fuel upgrades besides replacing the entire tank and going with an "Aeromotive, BG" set up. I already have a 255 inline Walbro. This would be extremely expensive. I'm ready to give up and order the OEM pump.

Walbro is fine, only burnout problems they have is when their used (inappropriately) on 99+ returnless system.

I forgot to mention that the burnout is due to the '98 style fuel pumps being voltage regulated. I've been told that '98 is a year all in itself.

No it's 99+ that is regulated by variable voltage. In a return style fuel system (pre 1999 Mustangs) the fuel pressure is regulated on the fuel rail in the engine compartment. The fuel pressure regulator acts like a faucet allowing fuel to go back to the fuel tank to relieve pressure. In 1999 Ford went with a returnless system, meaning there are no lines back to the gas tank and no fuel pressure regulator per se. Instead, the ECU increases and decreases the voltage to the fuel pump to regulate fuel pressure. If the fuel pump isn't designed for this (example: Walbro is designed to operate at a constant 12v) then it can burn up.

Your 1998 has a return style system, meaning a Walboro will operate as intended in your Mustang.

Ford Motorsports offers a 190lph pump specifically for the 98.

Hey Randy

Wow its a small world. I was looking for a larger pump for a 98 and found your post. Do you have a part number for the ford part? I found a vortech 255 pump (8F001-265) that they said is an exact fit. We will see...... I have been working on this problem for a week now. If you have the ford number I will have it for back-up if the vortech pump does not work. Is that the pump in your saleen?? Thanks Chris
