turning crank and cams by hand? do I need to take the chains off to do this?

2000 mustang ALIGNMENT TDC for new cams

I was trying to turn the crank today with a breaker bar.
I got scared because it would not turn and I thought I was going to break the crank bolt.

I took out the spark plugs before giving it a shot.

I think tomorrow I am going to take the cams off the heads and the chains off too and try to align it by turning the crank without the chains on.

Does anyone have any advice?

uh, its not the easiest thing to do. you are turning the crank, pistons, cams, all the followers, whatever is hooked to the drivetrain, etc. with the followers in place, it makes it pretty hard. if you were to take all the followers off, it will be a hell of a lot easier.

No thats not a dumb question, it is completly reasonable. Some time people dont think about stuff like that sometimes. It will be kind of a pain to turn but I used a ratchet and pipe to turn mine. But it can be done. Just turn verry slowly and if it doesn't want to go don't force it b/c if you break the head of that bolt off you're in for a world of hurt.
