Unhappy

car will not stay running at times what could it be ???

Ok here is the whats going on .
my car once in a while will shut off after i have parked it and let it sit for a while.
See I can start the car and get to work with no issues ,but when im leaving work i turn the ignition on, the car turns over but will not stay running .

NOW what i have to do is keep my foot oh so slightly on the gas pedal to keep the car running.if i take my foot off, the car will die regardless if its one min or 5 mins.

so to get home i have to keep my foot on the pedal and put the car in drive and take off.
now by the time i get home (in about 8-10 mins) what happens is
A) the car stays running like nothing was wrong
B) car shuts off ,but if i restart the car and i keep my foot on the pedal for mabe 2-3 more mins that car will not shut off.

When i first noticed this problem i changed the plugs with fresh plugs but the problem still comes and goes.

My car is a 2001 GT
has 62k miles on the motor
oil changed always like normal
fresh plug
no check engine lights on the dash (if there are any)

what could be the issue ?

thanks.

It sounds like your fuel pump is about to go. Could also be your filter or injectors are clogged up. Should go pick up some SLP cleaning products. Could also swap out the filter.

Check for any leaks in the air inlet tube and the vacuum hose going to the pcv valve or any other vac lines. Check the pcv valve. Make sure the gap was correct on the plugs. Check the air filter and fuel filter like Ug said. Fuel pump could also be going out as well like Ug said. Thats a start of things it could be. Also could be EGR valve, but I would think that would throw a light. Maybe clean the maf if you haven't.

i'm almost 100% positive that i know exactly what it is; your idle control sensor.... the reason why i say that im almost 100% positive is because i had the EXACT SAME thing happen to me in my old 99 gt. it took me forever to figure out what it was, and it actually became very irritating and it also made me look like i didnt know how to drive a stick bc ppl thought that i was stalling out all the time whereas it was really the idle control sensor lol... but anyways, i finally took it to this guy that told me that it might be the throttle position sensor, so i went to advance and bought a new one--throttle position sensor--and that wasn't it, so i started thinking about it, and it only cut off while at idle so i thought, what the hell, i'll try a new idle control sensor and sure enough that was exactly what it was. i took the throttle position sensor back to advance, picked up an idle control sensor, took the old one off and put the new one on and bingo--it started up just as if it were brand new. b4 you go and buy a new fuel pump or etc., i would recommend you trying a new idle control sensor--because it sure as hell worked for me.

Operation

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve controls the engine idle speed and dashpot functions. The valve is located on the side of the throttle body. This valve allows the necessary amount of air, as determined by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and controlled by a duty cycle signal, to bypass the throttle plate in order to maintain the proper idle speed.

Testing

1.Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2.Disengage the wiring harness connector from the IAC valve .
3.Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals of the valve.
4.Due to the diode in the solenoid, place the ohmmeter positive lead on the VPWR terminal and the negative lead on the ISC terminal.
5.If the resistance is not 7–13 ohms, replace the IAC valve.

idle control valve is always going up in these cars. its an inexpensive fix...two srews and a plug and you are done, Unplug the ICV while car is running and see if there is a change in idle,,,if not then there you go,

I'd say IAC also. I had that same issue, and had a buddy bang on it with a wrench. Started working fine. When I took everything apart to change the intake, I took it off and cleaned it real good with carb cleaner and never had another issue.

Well, not with the IAC at least...

I'd clean that the same time you clean your air filter. Doesn't take long. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Also, just a dumb thought, but take a look and see if your set screw backed out on the throttle body. If it did, it could explain why it is dropping off right after you let go of the gas.

my neighbor has a f150 and he had the same exact problem to the tee. he ran some seafoam through his gas and no problems since. i think its probably a fuel filter clog or dirty injector. try seafoam its only 8-9$ and it cleans your whole fuel system. if it doesnt work atleast your fuel system will be clean lol good luck

I don't think you have a vacuum booster. If you do then yes that will work, but if you have a hydraulic booster you should use the hose going to the pcv valve on the passenger side valve cover.

Replace the IAC FIRST, then seafoam. You don't want to potentially complicate any problems by not seafoaming your car correctly

With most problems the solution usually is the simplest. Try the IAC first.
