Cam Question
when someone says the stock GT can take a 270 without forged internals, or something...what does that mean? Which number is that? When I'm looking at cams, there are like 6 numbers...which one is the 270 referring to?

The cam that came up on that link is for a 5.0 push rod motor.
You have a 4.6 2v, wich means you have a cam in each cylinder head. First decide exactly what you want out of your motor and then contact a local speed shop that has mod motor experiance or a cam manufacturers tech line. |

I didn't even see what motor it was for hahaha, I know what engine I have, just to clear up the stupidity of that whole thing...I just didn't see that...and why do I have to get two cams in a SOHC? I was looking at all the cams on Summit for my engine, and all of them come with two or four...why would anyone need four? and why do I need two? And why can the 5.0 get theirs for a hundred or so, and I gotta pay like 500? Thats stupid

The 5.0 is a pushrod motor = 1 cam the drives every valve in both heads via pushrods..The 4.6 2V is SOHC = 1 cam PER head that almost directly drives valves but only in that head(2valves per cylinder). The 4.6 4V has DOHC = 2 cams per head that drive 4 Valves per cylinder(more flow).. The number 270 is the degrees of engine rotation that valves are open. Raising the duration numbers raises the usable RPM range, but lowers bottom end torque, and makes radical idling sound. But it only works if all other mods promote airflow at that higher usable RPM range. ie,, free flowing exhaust, larger T.body and plenum, larger ports in heads.. Hope this helps!
P.S. The extra expense is for the quantity of steel and machining involved in making all those extra cams.sux doesnt it. |

tell you what man and don't take this the wrong way. You sound like you really don't know much about how an engine works and that is completely okay because everyone had to learn sometime. Go to Howstuffworks.com and looks for how engines work, etc. That is the place where I first learned about engines when I was 16 and now I can pretty much tell you all about them. That website has wonderful moving diagrams that will teach you a lot. If you have trouble understanding any of it then feel free to ask on here and if you don't get the help you need, PM all you want and I can answer your questions. It's all to teach you.
And by the way, summit has good products in general but you can get outstanding products from other outlets. And by the way, even though that camshaft was not for your engine, FMS were okay in their time, but now they have much better technology in cams. |

yeah when they say SOHC thats a cam over the head, if there is only one head then its only 1 cam, if there are 2 heads, say in a v8 or v6 then there are 2 cams, one over each head. DOHC is the same thing, 2 cams per head. Once you actually think about the meaning you will be like oh, makes sense now. Single over-head cam
