Burning Oil

So, I know what burning oil usually means...is burning oil black when it comes out of the exhaust? or blue? my friend argues that if its black its not oil, but I know when my RX7 burned oil it was solid black, and smelled like oil...so the question is, burning oil black or blue?

I think both,, blue smoke=burning oil and heavy black soot in exhaust pipe = probably burnt oil or faulty emission equipment/or lack thereof.
