Crappy Seatbelt Retractors

My seatbelt retractors blow!!!

They don't retract the seat belt very well so whenever I get out of the car they get caught in the door sill if I forget to stick them inside the car. They work fine as far as the safety thing but they just don't roll back very well. Do any of you have the same problem?

John

Yeah! I love that sweet "clunk" sound when that happens!

Mine work it's just that they don't really retract so they're hanging all over the place. I might try and open up the interior and see what the hell is going on their.

Mine do the same thing...

When I have free time, I'll rip it open. More than likely (I think it's spring activated) the spring is just over turned and needs to be retightened or something. It's probably an easy fix.

Does anyone know how to pull the panel in the backseat where the retractors are? My backseats are out so it should be a little easier to get at them.

I have that problem from time to time, it doesn't get on my nerves as much as the belt twisting up in that little loop attached to the seat. I have a habit now that I check the seatbelt before the door closes, in every car on my way out.

I have race seats so I don't have that little plastic loop thing! That would drive me crazy!!!

Check to see if the belt is twisted between the "hanger" (the thing it loops through that's behind the seat) and the retractor. Mine used to do the same thing b/c there was a twist in there. I removed the twist and they work perfect. But I have heard that it's a common problem.

Its kind of a ford thing. My mustang,f150,a and aviator all do it once in awhile. We also got tons of cars in at work that would have this problem. Usually mysteriously appearing after we had worked on them..crazy ass people.

After reading your post, I went out and looked and, yes, the belt is twisted at the hanger. I guess I didn't look at it all that close but I'm gonna try and untwist it. The only thing I see that is kind of weird is that if I untwist it I'll have to twist it around for it to clip in right! Any suggestions as to the best way to do this?

John

mine are the same way. think i might undo the belt where it bolts down to the floorboard area and see what i can do. it's not a big problem, but i have to twist the seat belt to get it on then it doesn't retract because of the damn twist.

Rep points for you. I untwisted them and they work better. Not great but definitley better.

My drivers seat belt doesnt like to retract and the back drivers side is limp because I had a cooler held in by it for a few days on a trip...does anyone know how to remove the plastic piece that they both go into? does anyone know how to get the bottom back seat cushion out?
