Nice write up. This is a write up that should be in one of the mags as a DIY.

awesome write-up. My driver's side unit doesn't wind hardly at all and a new one is about $75 for the whole retractor. Thanks for taking the time to write this!

so here is a questions, second time this has happened, belt gets pulled all the way out, and while its retracting, it folds up on itself and then it cannot be pulled out at all. vertical position, beating it, brakes on, nothing. its jammed the F up. i tried to remove the torsion spring but no dice. still jammed. ford wants $110.99 + tax to buy another seat belt, i finally said im dont buying seat belts and bought 4 point harness. but if you know how to fix this please enlighten me. i would still like to fix this for personal reasons. thanks

There's gears on the side opposite the torsion spring. You should be able to take them out to keep the ratchet from working and be able to pull it out.

hey nice job, this was so useful i just did it and everything was right on the money.

**once i got to the retractor though, i thought finally!!! lol, only to realize that the seatbelt strap had basically just folded over itself causing a blockage so i didnt need to worry about the retractor part after all!!!(at least for right now).. i got the strap straightened out and let it roll back up so the crease can be taken out.

***and another key point, i didnt have the torque bit either and tried the allen wrench to get the seatbelt swivel off like you said, but it wouldnt budge and i didnt want to strip the threads...i went to checkers auto parts and got two torque bit sets for 11 bucks i got the swivel bolt out in seconds with it. ***THE SIZE THAT FIT WAS A T-50**

...now the fun part of putting everything back together where it belongs

hope this helps and saves time if your trying it.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, kill me if you must

But if you're only doing the two front seats, you don't need to take the back seat out right? I was confused as to why you took it out

By the way, amazing write up i appreciated it

I don't have my car, so I can't go look. But I believe you have to take the seat out to get the trim piece removed. I think there might be some "christmas tree" pins behind the seat.

But if you can remove the trim w/out taking out the seat, there's no reason it has to come out.

Thank you for this post.

I just got my mustang out of storage from the winter and the seat belt would not budge on it. I used the first part of this guide to see how to even get to the seat belt system.

After getting to it I found the plastic sides of the wheel had broken and cracked off into the system jamming it all up. Removed them and it was back to the norm.

Also I found that I didnt need to remove the truck carpet plugs. I found that i could just take that out of my 98 mustang 3.8 still attached to the seat backs.

Thank you again.

Thanks for a great write up. Super easy to follow.

My seatbelt was locked and wouldn't retract. I just needed to get to the retractor to unlock it. I followed the directions to get to the retractor and noticed that the seat belt was folded a little bit. I didn't mess with the retractor but unfolding the seatbelt fixed my problem. I did take off the "ford pins" on the trunk carpet , but am not sure if that was absolutely needed. I would also suggest using a heavy-duty pry bar (with a good hand-grip) for those pins.

Thanks for the compliment. I've heard a couple times that there are some extra steps. What's written worked for me and it's how I figured out how to do it w/out any directions.

That's good to hear. I can also say that after the mod, the seat belts hold up just fine in a big crash.
