Oil Pressure gauge

I've heard that the Oil Pressure gauge on our cars are actually just idiot lights. As long as OP is above 6 psi it registers as normal on the gauge. Is there a way to change out the sending unit so that it actually measures OP? Has anyone done a mod like this and still use the same gauge and not an aftermarket one?

John

You can add an additional sending unit. But yeah, the stock is a POS.

So all you would need is another sending unit that gives an actual reading? Will this sender work with the stock gauge?

No. You need an aftermarket setup. oil pressure has always been fairly low on my list of important gauges. Granted it has its time and place, but i have loads of gauges on my car and oil pressure is not on there yet (but i have the sensor already).

if you start the car in test mode it will tell you how many psi of oil pressure when you scroll through the menu.. so it obviously reads something..

The HEC Dealer test mode is available on 99 and up Mustangs. It allows the odometer to digitally display various data such as MPH, RPM, etc. Below is a link to more information.
