01 GT ticking

ok so i have been having this ticking noise coming from my right side of motor for over a month now and it is constant no matter if its cold or warm and it ticks faster as i give it gas, so i assumed it was a lifter that was lose making the noise or possibly a manifold leak, but i just took it to my local shop today and they had it for a few hours and told me they had it narrowed down to the cam shaft or needing a new head, does this sound right to any of you? they quoted me nearly 2 grand to have it fixed after labor thats if it needs a new head worst case scenario, but i dont know im just kind of baffled right now and very pissed off so any input would be great thanks

well it started off not too bad i mean it may have been doin it as long as ive had the car which is about 4 months but i just really started noticing it about a month ago while standing outside the car or with my music completely off i could hear it in the car but it has goten a bit louder now and i can hear it the whole time im driving or idoling unless i have my music up of course, i mean its not like a terrible noise just very annoying you can hear it over my exhaust makes my car sound like a piece, the car only has 35k miles on it

You're car has been abused or is a lemon. That's my opinion...

Sounds to me like you have something wrong with your valves. Possibly piston slap. It's hard to tell form the description. Vids are handy though.

that's wierd, my 03 Saleen has about the same mileage and i have a ticking in my engine on start-up. once it warms up though it slowly goes away. I took it to the delearship a bunch of times and everything they tried hasn't worked and all it has done is cost me money. It doesn't affect its performance but its annoying for about 5 minutes when i start it up so now i am just dealing with it. This might not have help fix your problem but at least you know now there's someone out there just as frustrated as you at the same problem. LOL good luck i hope you have better luck than i did

I had kinda the same situation... I had a ticking noise comming from my passanger side and I thought shit something in the valve-train is letting go. Until i further investigated it and found it was comming from the connection at the mid-pipe to the exhaust manifold. 2 of the bolts backed loose... Tightened them up and no more ticking. Food for thought...

i am guna say this is somthing simple ,, loose spark plug, leaking flang or header gasket , this could even be a bad tensioner pully or ac clutch,,
i would not take it back to that shop ,get a second opinion on it

I second the spark plug - check all the plugs make sure they are tight - it would be just like you said - the sound would start barely noticeable and over time it would get louder and the plug gets loser, then eventually BAM! It gets spit out and you need a new head. (helicoils are garbage and you really need to pull the head to retap).

thanks guys im going to check a few of those things myself and then maybe get a second opinion from somewhere else its just very annoying i love the car and it preforms great just does not sound as good as drives lol its a constant ticking from passenger side cold or warm, i hear it pretty loud at the top of the motor by the valve cover but also even a little louder up under the fender well or behind the tire that is why my first guess was exhaust leak at the cat or manifold but according to this mechnic he says there is no exhaust leak anywhere so i was then thinking lifter but he said he narrowed that out too so i dont know

check your spark plugs - its a simple check. If it was an exhaust leak it would be more of a fluttering sound as you give it gas.

Mine ticked for a bit, I thought is was my exhaust, but a few thousand miles later a spark plug blew out. Fixed that and no more tick

spitting out plugs

that could be exhaust leak or spark plug not properly istalled in on cylinder due to the fact tht there are no lifters on an ohv motor such asours it will not be that. my motor actually spit out a spark plug after it hasbeen making that noise for about 3 months i thought it was an exhaust leak until i was driving and my motor sounded likea harley and there was a coil on laying on top of my head and the motor fired the spark plug out of the head haha it was on the 4th cylender in the firing order (farthest rear cylinder on pass side)
