Camshaft

I have an '02 supercharged GT running on about 7psi and I'd like to put in a performance camshaft. There's an aluminum flywheel on it now (I'm sure that makes somewhat of a difference). I really don't know much of anything about cs's so I'm wondering how I should go about doing this. I want a little boost in performance and of course the amazing sound that a cs produces, but I don't want anything so gnarly that It's difficult to start and idle in somewhat colder weather. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Your probably going to want a cam that will allow you to use the stock springs.

If you have to replace the springs well, thats more money, then you might as well go ahead and replace the heads, etc..

I'd say talk to whoever tuned your car and see what they say. If your looking to do on a budget, I believe comp cams has several cams for S/C mustangs.

Edit: Flywheel should have nothing to do with cams.

If your going to spend the money I'd go with CMS stage 2 blower cams. They sound nice, make good power on unported heads, but the downside is I believe you need new springs.

Supercharger cams do not give have that engine lope sound associated with naturally aspirated high performance cams. That lope is caused by the overlap where both the exhaust valve and intake valve are open at the same time. Running that type of cam with a supercharger allows the boost to escape out the exhaust.

That is true, but it does have a slight cammed sound which is very noticeable over stock cams just not as noticeable as a NA cam. If I wasn't at work I would post a youtube video. You can do a search with this: mustang VT stage 2 blower cams and it will be one of those videos.

Where in MN are you? Hitech Motorsport is in Elk River. Check out the website if you want (Hitech Motorsport - Performance EFI Tuning / EFI Dyno Tuning Experts - Elk River, Minnesota - Midwest Region) . They have several custom cam specs for blower aps. depending on exactly what you are after. If you want to come on in, I can show you some dyno graphs of before and after.

I'm actually in Brooklyn Center so yea that may be an option that I'll take advantage of at some point. when I take it out of storage for spring I'll come and check out what Hitech has, I also was referred to a place called DB performance a little further north I believe. Thanks man I'll stop in.

I'm also wondering what the ball park range would be for a new cam. For you guys that have done this work before what would I be looking at for like minimum just putting in a new shaft and not changing springs or anything and also what would it be to just take it and run with it, go all out with camshaft and supporting mods for it?

Not going against what you said but one way or the other springs are always a good choice.

Price of whichever cams you want (usually about 5-600), some other stuff if you have a windsor vs a romeo (100 max), and then its not a bad idea to replace the front cover and valve cover gaskets while youre in there which is only about another 50 total, and if youre only doing cams and no springs, get the afm cam tool (30) and youll have those things in there in no time at all (2 hours tops) minus degreeing.

cam choice also depends on the rpm range you want the most power. power range for stage 2's are lower than stage 3's. I Run stage 3's and find the driveability is real good, but if you have a centri you will have a loss of midrange so I would go with stage 2's (or cms 2.5) or mph custom. You should always change your springs when adding performance cams. do it right the first time
