Drag only wheels/drag radials

I'm looking into getting some rear wheels/drag radials for occasional use at the strip. I don't have to have the lightest and fanciest. I'm only putting down 265rwhp/300rwtq for what it is worth. I have a 2004 Mustang GT. I don't want to spend that much money LOL!

What should I being looking at? Brands/sizes etc.

Would I be better off getting a 315/35 17 style, or a 15" wheel style?

cheapest drag wheels would probably be the Summit/Jegs Wheels.

If I go with the 15" wheels should I be going with 8" or 10" width?

Right now I have 17 X 10.5 wheels/with 315/35 17 tires (BFG KD).

Am I going to see a noticeable difference in traction with the drag radials?

15X8 wheels will be fine with a 5.5" backspacing, if you go with 15x10s make sure you get 6.5" backspacing

just get some 15x8s and put some MT ET streets on there and you will be more than fine and yes you will notice a big diff in traction

5.5bs on a 10inch rim also works good too .. thats the set up i run with a 275/50 mickey .. car is lowered on sportlines and tire doesnt rub .. 15x10 5.5 is common with fox bodies and are usually easier to find used cheap .. thats what i did anyways

but the fox rear and teh 96-98 rears are more narrow. a set of 10.50 bias plys have rubbed hard on a lot of cars.

Is that a typo? A 10" wheel is a tad wide for a 275 and an 8" is about optimum. If it's not a typo then pics please, b/c a 6.5" bs on a 10" wheel would put the wheel nearly flush with the fenders, a 5.5" would put it about an inch past the fenders. I use to have some 15x8's with a 4.5" bs (which sits the same as a 10" with a 6.5") and they were flush with the fender, I couldn't imagine pushing them out another inch.
this is them, and as you can see it's pretty flush

this is a 15x8 w/ 5.5" bs (this would sit 2 inches in compared to a 15x10 w/ the same bs). As you can see they are 'tucked' but not enough to stick them out 2 inches without hanging past the fender.

I am using a Weld Draglite 15x9 with 5.5 BS,along with a 275x50x15 M/T DR.
Seems to work and fit well. The 9 inch width is a great fit for that size tire.
Just remember to use long,3 inch axle studs, with the thick center Weld wheels,to be safe!

Thank you for the information!

Did I mention that I'd like to drive to and from the track (about 50 miles each way) on these wheels/tires (and be safe in case it rains)?

if you don't want to have to worry in the rain get Nittos.

for the power your making & the fact you want to drive to the track on them/etc, you would be best off to look into 315/35r-17 nitto d/r's & just run them all the time. you'll get at least a year of d/d & track time out of them & not have to worry about the weather, changing tires at the track , etc., etc. I have them on mine fulltime & haven't ever had a problem (dont put many miles on though but tons of track time & drive back & forth to track)

You could get two 16" v6 mustang wheels and put some drag radials on them. That seems to be a pretty popular thing to do when money tight or you just dont wanna drop a grand on welds.

I thought about getting some deep dish bullitt replicas (17 X 10.5) and putting on the Nitto 555Rs. But this would cost $681.98 shipped from American Muscle.

I was just wondering if I could do it a little bit cheaper some other way.

What about putting a drag radial tire on my stock Mustang 17 X 8 bullet rims?
Would this give better traction than the 315/35 17 BFG KDs on the 17 X 10.5 rims?

no need in going through the trouble. The next time you get around to it just snap a pic and PM it to me if you don't mind.

Saxman, go to summit racing and typin in "greg weld wheels." Greg Weld recently went out of business and summit is having a clearance on all Greg Weld wheels. $99 each for brand new wheels.

Would 275/60-15 be the size of tire that I would be looking for to fit on the 15" rims for the Mustang?

Sorry for asking so many damn questions!
