Faint Knocking Sound...

So I just recently started hearing this knocking sound in my car and it getting me It's not too loud but it's there. I opened the hood and tried to listen to the engine in every side but could not hear a thing. Then I went inside the car and sat on passenger seat and could hear it clear as day. Got out and tried to listen right on top of the wheel (passanger side) and it was loudest there. It doesn't seem to come from the engine but I guess it could? Any ideas??

Does it sound more like it's coming from up top, or down low?

Could be simple valve train noise. But keep on it and answer Zippy's ^^ questions.

Does the knocking speed up and slow down along with the rpm?

oh yeah i forgot to mention that... It doesn't seem to be louder or speed up with increase of rpms. I can only hear it when I'm on idle.

Well if you had a rod or main bearing going, or a cam bearing going bad, that noise would change with the rpm.

Are you sure you're not hearing injector tick?

Also, is your car automatic or manual?

Car is being worked on right now, and I'm doing a manual swap. So automatic when it was happening last wek. I could hear it most when i was going on my driveway(its a litte uphill) left the car on drive and got out and that's when I checked the noises^^

I didn't think it would be an injector tick. It was too loud to be that, Also never heard that noise before until recently

i read somewhere in the mustang owners manual that you shouldn't worry about a faint knocking sound. I was surprised.

Man I wish I had taken a video of this before. No I can't. Don't have my camera on me and the car is being worked on right now. When I'm all done with the swap I'll take a video of it and post it if it's still going on.

read page 184 of the owners manaul and you'll know what i'm talking about.

Here's what it says

Octane recommendations
Your vehicle is designed to use “Regular” unleaded gasoline with pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87. We do not recommend the use of gasolines labeled as “Regular” that are sold with octane ratings of 86 or lower in high altitude areas. Do not be concerned if your engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if it knocks heavily under most driving conditions while you are using fuel with the recommended octane rating, see your dealer or a qualified service technician to prevent any engine
damage.

That is detonation, and typically it doesn't occur at idle, only under acceleration.

Could be an exhaust leak making the "tick". Under load he might not be able to hear it over the engine at higher rpms.
