***Need Help*** Fuel pump problem?!?!?
About 5 days ago I was driving home from work and I noticed that my 2001 Mustang GT Auto felt like it was hesitating a bit when I would hit the gas.
I pulled into my drive way and it felt like it was going to shut down on me, Ive never ran out of gas in my car but I would imagine that the way the car was acting it might have been. My gas gauge read 1/4 tank left.... a few people have mentioned that it may be the fuel pump and what I felt was the fuel pump gradually going out. Its not a cheap fix so I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight on the other possibilities. When I turn the car on it turns but it just wont start. Car has 47K on the odometer and fuel filter was changed at 30K. Thanks in advance. |

Have you cleaned the throttle body at all? Try that first, it's a good thing to do anyways. I had a problem with mine about a year ago. I had an 1/8 of a tank left ,so it said, and couldn't get it to start. Took the tank out and the plastic end clip for the filler that goes in the tank had come off and was stuck under the float. Side note you just reminded me that I need to change my fuel filter. It's only been 57k miles on it.

Does anything look fishy with your injectors or fuel rails? I finally figured out why I've been getting shitty gas mileage these last two weeks..... the bolt that holds the fuel rail down loosened up and one of the injectors was leaking gas! Car acting real shitty when it was doing that.

if you got a tuner, look at the frps and see what the pressure is. if it is ok, you can knock that factor out of the way. fuel pump change isnt bad at all, only take 1-2 hours to change and there are people that pretty much give their stockers away.

put more gas in it, you could be reading that you have a 1/4 of a tank but really you have none.
check the grounds on the fuel pump, if one come loose its not going to work. just some places to start |

I had a '97 cavalier and the fuel pump went out on it. It made it buck and die. It sucked. Back then I didn't know much about cars and paid someone to change out the pump...got raped in the process. Lesson learned and started learning a lot about cars.

Its not the throttle body, unless some guy was stuffing rags in there. |

So i went out to the car and when I turn the the key to the on position without starting the car I can here something turn on.... like a pressurized line turning on.
One thing I have noticed is that when I try to start the car the THEFT light stays on. Not sure if this is common but I dont remember it coming on like this. I checked fuses, all look fine (Fuse box under the hood). Reset the fuel pump from the switch in the trunk and still nothing. I didnt try the valve. Where do I find the fuel line valve? |

Its on the front of the passenger side rail, under a black cap. Remember gas will spray out, so wrap a rag around the screw driver before you see if there is pressure in it.

mine was doing the same. look at my thread I posted. Son of a...... 1fastfox seems to have good suggestions! try fuel stabilzer for the rest of your tank the 93 octane to clean the system. mine would start then die and I would have to give it gas to start. good starts for the past 3 times though!

Thanks.. check it out.... There are two lines. One with a red/green cap (dirty) that has a tag on it that read pressurized line and a black cap.
The red/green cap with tag did not have any pressure, car was off no key in ignition. Black cap did have pressure and I used a white rag to determine the substance, it was yellow and cold so I am thinking the black cap was the A/C. |

its called the scraider valve and its located on the fuel rail. locate the fuel rail and look for a valve on the end. also you want to have the key in the ignition and the key turned to on. you want the fuel pump to prime the lines if it is working. that will bring pressure to that valve and should spray gas out if working properly.

Found the valve, used the screwdriver with the key in the ignition and in the on position. No Pressure.
Did it with the key out and no pressure as well. Any other suggestions? |

and you said you can hear the whine of the fuel pump priming? sounds like you got either a bad pump or a line is clogged somewhere. did you check the fuel shut off switch in the trunk?
