R.I.P. Alternator

So I just got to breaking in my new engine and i've gotten about 30 miles on it and the car dies. No charge to the battery whatsoever so we think the alternator crapped out on us. Do yall have a specific alternator you reccommend? I think i'm going to try to get one that is powdercoated black. Is there any need for a high output?

High output will only help if you have excessive demands on the electrical system (i.e. an audio system with a large amperage draw... or coil packs that require a high output alternator, etc.) So I would say go with a stock replacement and you should be good! Have that one checked at autoparts store first though... you could have other problems.

No high output is neccisary unless you have some crazy accesories ie huge subs LOL. I was looking at alternators last night because the stock one is ugly as sin! Msd makes a billet one that looks sick but I don't think the make it for our cars. You might have to fab up a bracket

I doubt it would be hard to get a stock housing powder coated. Given that it's not corroded ofcourse

Should I get mine rebuilt? How much would that cost? Why would my alternator go bad after 30k mi btw?

Is it oem? Ive had a few aftermarket (including high output ones) not last for very long at all. Id try to go with an oem one and get it powder coated. mralternator.com has some that you can get already powdercoated.

not to insult your intelligence but did you test the alternator? Pull the neg lead off the batt while running and see if it dies? And if so check grounds? And check output with multimeter?

+1 I agree here even w/ any vehicle. It seems to be a common mis-hap w/ aftermarket ones.

I'm leaning towards getting it rebuilt and powdercoating the casing...

aww that sucks, i had no idea they only sold ones up to 99 ive never looked on there for one for the mustang 77k on the original one and still going strong (knock on wood). Try excessive amperage. I dont know their website but I think thats the name.

Just read the post above. Getting it rebuilt wouldnt be a bad idea if you can find a place thatll do it for pretty cheap. Ive heard of some places only charging around $50.
