Trans question

I have about 57k miles on my car and would like to change the trans fluid. If I pull the plug and drain it, how much would I have to put back in? Also is it better to go with Royal Purple of is there another brand out there thats at Autozone thats as good? My car is going on a mustang dyno this Sat. and I would to have it running and shifting smoothly.

Last thing. I pure it in from the top after takeing the shifter out right? Someone told me you don't have to do that with Fords but that doesn't sound right.

I just changed it yesterday, used Mercon5. I would say don't even worry about changing it. Its a closed system. Unless you have some serious problems, the oil will look pretty new. 126k miles on the clock, and the oil looked just like the new stuff. Waste of time really..... unless you're just looking for a reason to piss with your car.

Also, you probably won't notice any bit of a difference in shifting with new fluid. And you need to buy a hand pump at your local auto store, and just pump it into the top drain plug hole, after you put the bottom one it. The haynes manual says to fill it until its level with the top plug.(3 quarts~6pints)

do you have a 3650? manual or auto? the 3650 takes 3.3qts of mercon 5. When i did mine i used 3qts mercon5 (it may say something about auto tranny but ignore it) and the other .3qts i used lucas stop slip additive. smoothed shifts out a lot. 3.3qts will not bring you level with the bottom of the top plug. its 1/2in down i think. take the shifter off its easier then pumping and less messy. its always good to change your fluid. i think its required at 60k but not a 100%. good luck

yea it's a 3650 trans manual. I drive it year round and it's just starting to get to that point where I need to clean out all the fluids and change a few things.

I did change out the trans fluid with Royal Purple. Seems to shift a little bit smoother, but I haven't really put it to a test yet. I checked with Autozone and a few other shops just to make sure nothin would go wrong. My internet went down on me right after I started this tread so I couldn't check to see what advice you guy where giveing me.

Side note. I found out one of the 4 bolts that holds my MGW shifter in had come loose. That was a fun surprise.

I heard you can use like just regular autozone auto tranny fluid with a little of lucas oil stabilizer? Sounds crazy lol

^ Not sure about that. The Royal Purple I put in works great now that I have been able to run it through all the gears a few times. Could be all in my head but I think it shifts a tad bit faster and easier now too. I guess I'll really find out just how good it is after I hit the track at end of April/start of May.
