I think you're trying to get a in between thing here. But you really shouldn't. You want a new tire that hooks, but you don't want(can't) get a wheel that gives you hooking capability. If you want a tire that hooks, get a tire that hooks, and get a wheel that is meant to go with it. Sure people have probably ran 315's on 8 or 9" wheels, is it a good idea? No.
If I was in your position, I'd probably get some wheels and tires that are meant for the purpose you are trying to fulfill. If you want traction, and want to drag your car; get drag tires. If you want some new tires for your DD and don't have the money for drags, or street 315's; then get DD tires on your budget. Anything in between is going to be a compromise, and in your case ~traction vs safety. Buy what you need now, save up and get what you REALLY want, a wider wheel in the back if you want bigger tires.

yeah well i'm actually getting these because one of my tires is dropping like 3 psi a day and i need to replace them, and im not able to save up enough for wheels and tires so i planned on just getting tires that fit on my rims but i really wanted a drag radial so that i can get my 60' under 2.19 (previous best) and put hurt out on cars around town lol

If thats the case, IMO (if I am remembering correctly) Nitto makes a 245 that I used on my '01 Bullitt w/ stock wheels. And again, IMO a 275 is to wide for a 8" wheel. Will it fit? Yes, if you really want it to, but it's not going to give any more traction or look any wider than the 275. And to answer your above question, the 555R's will hook considerably better than just the 555's. It's a street tire vs. a drag radial. I believe my personal best that I managed was a flat 1.8 60' with the 245 555R's (also some suspension work though) |

Ok well since i couldn't find any 245 drag radials i think i made the right decision. i purely wanted performance, good launches, idc about how long it lasts or how it drives in the rain, or if its a little big. and for the rims i have im pretty sure i couldn't get anything that would make my drag time better. so i got the 275 555r's.

here in dallas it's been raining all week and heard that nitto 555r's are bad in wet conditions but i havent noticed anything bad they ride good and were good in the rain. maybe it's 'cause they're new i dont know but so far they've been good in the rain.

Did you already order the 275's? Here's a link to 245's just if you're interested:
