Ford GT fuel pump swap - guide

I looked and couldn't find any step by step instructions on how to swap over a ford gt pump into my mustang gt. I figured I might as well take pictures of the swap and make my own, this is for anyone interested in the swap.

Materials needed
A buddy, much easier with a second set of hands
Ford GT fuel pump
A few small hose clamps
About a foot of fuel line
A couple electrical spade connectors
a couple rags

Tools needed
Jack stands
Jack
Utility knife
Ratchet, 13mm, 8mm, 5mm sockets, and medium length extension
Wire Crimpers
A file

Alright start by getting the car on nice flat ground. You don't have to jack the car up too high, just get the wheels off the ground by a couple inches and y ou should have plenty of room. After the car is up, take the 13mm socket and extension and remove the bolts that hold the tank up. There should be three bolts, two on the passenger side and one on the driver side, in front of the tank. I found it easier to just slide the cover under

The tank wont come off completely, the hose used when filling up the car will prevent the tank from detaching completely. You may be able to swap pumps without dropping the tank completely, but it is a lot easier with the tank on the ground. To remove it, its easier if one person pulls the tank towards down and towards the drivers side while the other person pulls it out of the tank.

Once you get the tank down, clean off the top to prevent anything from falling into the tank. You will need to remove six bolts with a 8mm socket. This exposes the inside of the tank, so its probably best to be careful not to drop anything in there.

This part that is easier if the tank is on the ground. You need to pull the little assembly that the pump sits in. There are only two push tabs holding it in place, push them in and it will all come out easily. Watch out for the floater though, it comes with and might get hung up on something.

Now is probably a good time to throw a rag over the opening to prevent anything from falling in the tank. Go ahead and remove all of the 5mm screws, disconnect the fuel line, but be careful and remember how it sat. The top pulls off once you unscrew it all, and the pump should slide down, right out of the top. Take the filter and rubber pad off of the bottom for use on the Ford GT pump.

Here is a picture of the pumps side by side, they are almost the same, but the Ford GT pump isn't a direct fit. Major differences are the plugs for power, and the size of the outlet.

The outlet for the Ford GT pump is a little smaller, but the fix is simple. Simply cut off a length of the tube that came with the pump and slide it over the outlet. This gives you a fair seal when you press the little manifold back on the pump.

Now you need to file or sand down the plastic on the top around the power connectors. Trim it down until it fits properly where the old pump sat. It might take a couple tries, but once done it should look close to this.

Put the assembly back together, don't forget to attach the filter and rubber pad from the old pump. It should all go together fairly easy, I had problems getting the rounded piece to stay bolted on the top, so I left it off and discarded the screw.

Now clip off the old plug, strip the wires and crimp the spade connectors in place of the plug. Connect the black wire to the -, and yellow to the +, make sure the wires are snug. Attach fuel line, don't forget to throw clamps on it. Take note of how that rounded piece was oriented, don't put it in backwards. It is also probably not a bad idea to zip tie the wires to the fuel line. Now just pop it all back into place. Check over everything one more time to make sure it is all nice and tight. Just a little tug on the wires and fuel line, make sure they wont just fall out while driving.

Now just bolt down the top, make sure nothing gets caught in the way. Plug in the hose on the passenger side of the tank, if you disconnected it. Lift the tank into place, set the cover over the tank and reattach the brackets. It is a little easier if you do the drivers side first as it is hinged. With everything in place, its all done and good to go.

I would have left the pprv out because it's a hell of a restriction. You should also use fuel injection hose clamps those will allow for leaks at high pressure.

What kind of fuel line? If it just regular fuel line and not the special submersible type like gates sells for 20 a foot, the gas in the tank will eventually eat through it. The regular fuel line is not threated on the outside.

wrong clamps
wrong hose
pprv should have been removed
hose should be connected direct to pump and that connector eliminated
couple of holes drilled in basket
connections should be soldered

people on other websites that did not do these have had problems, especially with the way the fuel connection is cobbled on. the way yours is plumbed there are going to be many internal leaks and you won't get the full advantage of the gt pump
