Al. driveshaft
I got quoted 150 bucks just to fix my damn u-joints. I figured for 70 bucks more i could get a aluminum driveshaft that i could probably install but i know you have to transfer the yoke over on automatics. Is this correct? and how hard is it?

Yes you have to transfer the yoke over for an auto. Its simple and shouldnt take you but ten minutes max. On the other hand its the same exact process as changing a u-joint. Soooo logically if you cant change the u-joints youre having issues with now and have to pay someone, spending $70 more for an al. drive shaft isnt going to be "only $70" more because youre gonna have to pay someone to swap the yokes for you. Its a fairly simple process to do yourself and you can rent the tool(s) just about anywhere if you dont have them though.

yeah you gotta switch the yoke for auto's (also cut the weight off the yoke while your there) other than that it's just a straight forward swap, probubly 30 min. start to finish (+ time to jack the car up). also get the cheapest d/s as the cost diffrences are due to the diffrent splined yokes & you'll be tossing that anyway (the one that comes with the d/s that is). seemed worth it on my car but wouln't know till tomorrow (will be 1st time to the track with the car this year).

lol not for something that simple
but all in all just get you a ujoint press, pair of pliers, and a 12 point 13mm socket or wrench (think its 13mm), and a marker Mark the driveshaft in relation to the pinion flange so you can like it back up when you put it on. Remove the 4 bolts using the socket/ratchet or wrench mentioned, using the pliers remove the little retaining clips for the ujoints, press them out with the ujoint press tool. And put it back together with the new ones. Theres a few other alternatives to a u-joint press if you cant find anywhere thatll rent you one. Last edited by ajm; May 9th, 2009 at 12:42 AM. |

Sounds like a good plan. I didnt know stuff for them was that cheap. I about shit when I seen that link to parts for $1300 or something like that. Which way you wanna go is up to you, if it were me id just get what you linked, upgrade/down grade to parts you want on the drop down and get it done. As far as boring it thats up to you, probably wont be a major gain in performance as far as I know but itll leave you with a nice fresh cylinder.
