i'm not an expert but a buddy of mine had this sort of problem, there is a mechanism that tells the compressor to kick on, it's like a thermostat of some kind. Probably something to do with that. For his S10 it was still pretty steep to fix so he never did it, exact same symptoms as you describe.

Look towards the pass side firewall and youll see the accumulator (black canister looking thing) with a switch on the side of it and a harness plugged into it. Chances are its that switch (a/c clutch cycle switch/pressure cycle switch). They cost like $12 at a parts store and take about 30 seconds if that to change. Ford part number is 95bw-19e561-aa

When my cycling switch went bad my a/c would come on sometimes and not come on somtimes. Then it stopped coming on at all, and the idle was really jumpy. Their actually about 21 bucks at a ford stealership if you go there. At least its a cheap way to check. I had my compressor and accumulator changed, and then found out it was teh cycle switch -.-

140$ !?!?!?!?

Where the fuck did you buy it from? We were talking about a little electrical connection that screws on to a schraeder valve by the accumulator. I bought it from the Ford dealership at like 21.39$.

No problem. Sucks that you had to spend $140 more than needed but oh well shit happens I guess maybe you can sell your "old" one to someone?
