when this happened to me I went to the local autozone and asked what they had. Helicoil makes a kit called saveathread.... It comes with a tap, three different lengths of inserts and a installation tool. no drilling needed, and it is super simple to use. I coated the tap with grease and only turned it 1/2 a turn at a time so most of the shavings would stick to the grease. the tap is two stage, the first is the actual size of your plug and that helps guide and pull the larger second stage down into the head squarely. it took me maybe 2 hours to tap it all out and installt eh insert, but then again I was going super slow. once the threads were all cut I used a shopvac with some fuel line taped into the end of the nossle to go into the combustions chamber to help suck anything out that might have fallen in. coated the outside of the insert with a little ultra copper gasket material and screwed it in. let everything sit over night and installed the plug and away I went. been running strong for about 6 months now. granted I am always worried that when I do my next plug change the instert stays in the head... and if you go this route, might not want to cut the threads all the way through the head. I did, and I was worried that I might have the insert screw itself into the chanber.

I believe the kit only cost 25 bucks or something.

Good luck.

R3D, not really sure what the two stage thing your talking about is? When I fixed a stripped thread, i just used the tap it came with and then put the insert it. And you DO WANT the insert to stay in there. You should ever need to replace it.

its a single tap, but it has the plug sized thread at the tip, then it expands to the size for the insert. so it actually is cutting two different sizes of threads.

and I know the insert needs to stay in there. where did you get the idea that I thought it should come out? Only thing i said is that I am worried that when i do a plug change the insert will come out with the plug...

All taps are tapered so you can start them but the are still one size. I wanst sure what you refering to when removing the plug but the coil should stay in, the upper tip is designed to bite into the material so it wont release. The kit I bought cam with about 15 coils and it should ruin anythin if it does come out.

well, i coated the tap (pictured above) with grease, filing in the flutes. that way most of the shavings stuck there. I also only would turn it about .25 or at most .5 around before backing it out and cleaning and re-greasing it. that way most stuck in the grease. the rest I simply vacumed out iwth a shopvac that I had attached a length of fuel line to the nossle of. fule line fit into the plug hole and was able to be moved around in the chamber getting anything that fell in there.
