Oil filter

I have an 02 GT with 15K miles on it, and have noticed some oil leaking... It looks like it is coming from around the oil filter. I have tried using different brands of oil filters and am still seing some oil... Has anyone else had this problem?? I am using synthetic oil, would that have anything to do with it??

Synthetic oil is more viscous because of the fact that it is synthetic. Hence when you have someone that switches to full synthetic from regular oil they may show leaks since the new oil has more viscosity (thinner).

Hopefully I said that right. That's going back to my 7th grade science project.

Two quarts of oil a day??? Holy crap at that rate you probably paid for the cost of repair in buying oil for a month.

yeah true, my best friends uncle fixed it for me for 3 cases of beer

how the leak happened: my dad was reinstalling the lifter plate on the side of the engine(81 4.9L in-line 6) and broke off the last bolt near the end on the inside of the block leaving a 3/8 in. gap where oil just flowed like a small stream, lol My dad had to have back surgery a couple of years before that. The surgeon fucked something up and my dad lost feeling in his right arm. Thats how he torqued that bolt too much and broke it off.

yeah, the center of the bolt had to be step drilled, and then removed with an E-Z OUT tool

kindof ironic cuz I have to do that same job almost everyday to stuck panel screws on aircraft, I wish I wouldve known how to do that shit back then

oh yeah, last time I took leave and went back home to SC, I went by my high school and u can tell where my assigned parking space was cuz the middle of it is stained black still lol, a lil faded but u can still tell alot of oil was on it, lol

That would be the last thing you want to do, you always check to make sure there is no additional ring because then the filter will leak the 2 qts. you might want to check the housing for the filter. it might have crack from over tightening. Just a hunch.

That sounds about right. Does it leak more when the engine gets hot? If it is a crack fix it sooner rather than later. The more it cools and then heats up and expands the bigger it will get. Then the not a big deal will be a big deal.

If you're looking when the car is cold it might be hard to see. It's like slow leak in a tire. When the tire is cold it barely leaks, if at all, but when the tire gets warm it goes down quicker.

Would it be more likely that the crack would be in the car or in the filter itself?? because I have tried 2 different filters now and it still "seeps" slowly but I have not looked at the aluminum housing that the filter skrews into

I'm not really sure. I don't really know anyone who has had that specific problem. I was trying to give you suggestions of what it could be.

just change the filter its like 3 dollars, and make sure you put a little bit of oil on the gasket before you tighten it down. ( idoubt thats the problem)

DO NOT PUT 2 GASKETS ON THE OIL FILTER!!! then you'll have an oil cannon rather than a slow leak. <-- learn from someone who found that out the hard way. (always check to make sure the old gasket came off with the old filter

im not sure whats goin on but all that i know is that if something is more viscous then it is thicker, not thinner.

I had a feeling I f'ed the wording up.. so I meant that synthetic is LESS viscous than regular oil.
