Used Sct Xcal?
Is buying a used tuner a bad Idea?
what should I look for or look out for I've seen a couple around on some forums and was thinking about picking one up mainly for when I get my gears intake and exhaust wich should be soon

if you pick up a used one, chances are its locked to the sellers cars VIN number so if you want to use it for your car, you gotta send it back to sct and they will unlock it for 100 bucks plus shipping.

how do they become locked ? if the seller goes back to his stock tune does that unlock it?
150 bucks + even a decent price to purchase and you may as well buy a new one right? and thanks for the responce guys

If they load the orginal tune back to the car it will unlock it. But it's probably programmed to a different computer code ford used several different ones. If it's the same the you could use the tunes they have flashed on it which might not be good for you. A lot of SCT tuners can unlock them.
It has nothing to do with your Vin. Mine was used through SGS and they never asked for my vin number.

so unlocked I could still scan codes and change shift points and correct the speedo and download a new tune later on is that right?

And that $150 charge to unlock a tuner isn't so bad sometimes. I bought My SCT LiveWire for $90 then tack the $150 unlock charge on top of that and there you have it. LiveWire for $240 when they retail for $570. But actually i figured out how to unlock my LiveWire so i didn't have to pay SCT $150 to unlock it....Just payed $90

yeah, many times its cheaper to buy new. I cut deals on custom tunes when someone buys a tuner from me, but charge $100 for a tune if they already have an xcal. Remember without a tune (unless its a SF version) all you can do is datalog.

thanks thats kinda what was slowly starting to realize. unless i come across one for a steal
So if I were to get one thru you would it have a few beginning tunes from you or the ones from sct? right now the car is stock but i plan on gears and exhaust mods first then probably TB and plenum I'm staying pretty mild this is my everyday kid shuttling taxi as well as my toy

I do both custom tunes and the preloaded ones. The preloaded tunes are cheaper of course, but i will normally upgrade a customer for the difference in price once they get some mods and need a custom tune. For mostly stock cars the preloaded tunes work just fine.
