I know yall hate chevys... but i need some help

well, i was at my friends party last night, cause his dads out of town. and he borrowed his dads 1980 corvette to come to my house. well, we wake up very hung over and the car wont start. and its stuck in my drive. and his dad comes home in about 10 hours. the car cranks, but wont catch and the choke light keeps coming up with a flashing red battery sign. The lights work fine so i dont think its the battery. need help now

Could be a bad ignition module. Pull a plug then put it back into the wire boot. Hold the electrode withing an inch of one of the accessory brackets while your bud turns it over to check for spark.

That's about a $10 part that's in the distributor underneath the rotor and when they die it's just like you describe. Check for spark and see if you have any.

Take the cap off (you can leave all the wires on) and lay it toward the firewall. Two screws hold the rotor on. Underneath you'll see a small module sorta shaped like a boomerang that has a screw holding it down. Take the screw out and unplug it. Take it to AutoZone and tell em you think it might be bad and ask them to test it. They have the machine to do it and you'll know in a minute if that's all it needs. A new one will come with a tiny packet of something like silicone, make sure you smear that stuff liberally on the bottom before you screw it in. That stuff protects from heat and premature failure.

so this is the most likley cause? the lights work, the car turns, but it wont start. last night it started but then died and we just left it. the choke light and battery light keep comming on. and there are no vaccuum leaks.

If it doesn't have spark that's the most likely culprit. It's super easy to get to, the cap is held on by two clips you pop off with a flat screw driver then remove the two screws holding the rotor on pull it off - don't worry - it only goes back on one way so you can't get it backwards. Underneath the rotor you'll see the ignition module on the edge.

listen under the rear of the car when you crank it over. The fuel pump should turn on for a second or two while it cranks, and you should hear a whirring sound. If the sound of the car starting makes it about impossible to hear, try cranking it for just a second then listen for the fuel pump afterwards. Most likely it's the spark, but at least you can rule fuel out this way.

i think is the point when kids learn that you always will get caught when you do stupid shit that your not supposed to be doing, like borrowing a car thats not yours. I learned when i was your age also. If it doesn't get fixed to tell your friend to start warming up his ass cause his dad is gonna beat it when he gets home. I guess thats just the price he pays for driving the car. hehe

80 Corvette still had a carb and mechanical fuel pump bolted on the bottom front passenger-side corner of the block.

No, I just know that distributor. It was a very good unit and common on GM cars. If they ever just die for no apparent reason that's the first thing to check. It did happen to me once, but it was on a Blazer. Also happened to a friends 79 TA. Pre-computer cars didn't just die! They may have sputtered and smoked and otherwise run like hell, but they gave PLENTY of notice before they died.

Except the ignition module. :wink

that also happened to me once in my 90 gmc. i had just got the truck and was going to pick up the gf for a first date and i got about halfway to her house. i was crusing down a hill so i let off the gas to coast, and it was running great, when i put my foot back on it would die. wouldnt get anything when trying to accelerate. called the dad, let me take his vette, and all was cool, we went back the next day and that was the problems. that little module was done
