cant tighten nut on top of ball joint

When I try to tighten the nut on top of the steeda x2 balljoints the whole threaded part of the joint spins around. How do I stop this?

place a jack under the controll arm where the ball joint is jack it up to keep pressure on the ball joint then take the nut off

id think that if the ball joint is still turning in the bore there is some thing else wrong,, maybe take the nut back off then toss on some big washers to take up some space tighten it back up to suck it up into the bore then remove the nut remove washers and try again with out the washers or you could allways tack weld it

there is no where to grip it but on the threads.. and there is a giant gap between the steering knuckle and the nut

i sprayed some pb on the threads and hit the knuckle onto the control arm with a hammer and it tightened after that

Installing Steeda X2 Ball Joints

OK, I know this thread is old, but there are still folks putting new ball joints on old Mustangs (me), and this thread is the first thing that comes up when you Google "Steeda X2 spinning".

I would like to thank SupeBeef1000 for his suggestion. I tried pounding on the spindle, etc., and got the nut somewhat "on", but it was still hanging up above the seated spindle when the ball joint shaft would start spinning. The nut that came with my Steeda X2's (and I don't think the Steedas are necessarily unique in this regard) are locknuts, slightly out of round as you hit the "top" of the nut, so they "catch" on the Steeda stud and start it spinning.

I saw SuperBeef's washer suggestion, and went hunting for a stack of 1/2" washers. Not finding any, and since I was installing some MM Caster/Camber plates at the same time, I noticed the strut spacers provided with the MM kits were the perfect size. (I would think a 1/2" stack of 1/2" washers would also work.) I took the nuts back off (no easy feat since the studs were spinning (I was able to do it with an impact wrench)), put the spacer on the stud, and tightened the nut back on (not getting to the "locking" part). I was able to torque the nut down enough to get the spindle tight enough to the stud to keep it from spinning when I removed the spacer and put the nut back on.

It is also helpful to note that on the Steedas, the spindle is fully seated on the ball joint stud when there is still about a 1/2" space under the spindle and above the grease boot. (This is also why installing the Steedas will lower the front about 1/2".)

Hope this helps, and thanks again.
