3.73's/4.10's - gear whine?

If you've changed out your stock gears for 3.73's or 4.10's, please respond. What I want to know is who made the gears and do they whine.

My pickup has gear whine after putting in Motive Gear 4.56's and I don't want it in this car.

Thanks.

I changed out mine to 4.30's and they run queit as a church mouse. FRPP is what I've gotten and everyone I've talked to about gears say they are the greatest. I've heard from some people that Motive gears do whine a lot.

I have Motive 4.10's and have more of a whistle from 40-50 mph. If concerned I would go with the FRPP's as they do seem to heva the least complaints. Just be sure the FRPP's are made by someone rather than Motive who used to be one of their suppliers. My mechanic said the Motives are about 50/50% for whine. I also went with the lighter gear oil, Mobil 1, some weight like 75W-85, instead of Ford's new recommended XXW-140 and I may upgrade to that for several purposes and will see if the heavier oil helps the whistle I have. I have motive gear 4.10's, they whine a little between the speeds of 40-65 only when im just keeping speed. You know not accelerating but not decelerating, just sorta holding speed. Im not worried about it. If it got worse at higher speeds then i would.

The gears in my truck are Reider Racing, not Motive - my bad. I had a few guys look at them after the second install. Said they didn't look like they were burnished in properly. Whatever. They whine around 45 to 50 mph and I don't want anymore of that.

Sounds like FRPP is the way to go. What the best place to buy them and an install kit?

www.summitracing.com carries FRPP They should have a good price. Not sure they will have the pinion and side bearing shim kits though. IO got my shims at a local gear/driveshaft supplier for trucks and they ran about $30. for both kits. Mark

A quick search for ring and pinion sets showed the Ford gears, 3.73's, for $165. and a good install kit with the shims for both the pinion and cARRIER BEARINGS FOR $79.99. m SWEET

+1

Make sure if you do it you know how. Or if a shop does they have a good rep.

some gears are machined a certain way. usually more aggresive pattern. and they're just prone to whining. its not neccesarily a bad thing. look at the old muncie rockcrusher. a tough as tranny but the way the gears engaged they were noisy. but nearly indestructible.
