plans to build twin turbo 347 for 2002 stang
I'm about to sell my corvette I've been building for the last few years (no more chevy's in my driveway!) and I want to make my mustang faster, but if i take the 4.6 out, it's not going back in. I've also been dying to make something twin turbo, and as 302's are cheap, and a 347 doesn't cost anymore to build, since i already have to buy rods and a crank, it all comes down to a twin turbo 347. I found a few good turbo kits on ebay for around $1000, and with all the stuff i'll need for the engine, and the k-member to mount a 302 in my chassis, it's looking like i can build everything for > $5000. However, i would like to find some one that has done something similar, or just twin turbo'd any motor in a 4.6 mustang to see about the plumbing. Based on how large the 4.6 is, and how small the 302 is, i believe there should be plenty of room for everything, but seeing some pictures of turbos installed would help put my mind at ease. Any info is greatly appreciated
Scott

Just my 2cents: I did the 5.0 thing for a number of years (still have a 347powered 85Ranger) and I think you should keep the 4.6 simply because the block is WAY stronger (unless you go after-market block) and you can keep the COPs system using crank and cam sensors to power an MSD ignition.

the block may be, but i would need a better crank to run any significant amount of boost and it's way easier and cheaper to get 700+ horsepower out of a 347. I ran the engine diagnostics and with inexpensive heads and only 10lbs of boost, it will push out about 680 hp, and 700+ with 12lbs

The 5.4 was an option for a while, but it's a little wider and i've heard you have to modify the strut towers. Plus, to get that kind of hp out of a 5.4 would also be pretty expensive, because i don't have any 5.4 parts.

I'm building it from the ground up, i get all my parts for wholesale prices, so it's fairly inexpensive, and 302 stuff seems to be even cheaper than sbc. We just built my friend a 383 stroker for his cammaro for about $1400 and it's a solid 400+ hp engine

iv never dropped a 5.4 in, but i remember seeing a write up where a guy only had to notch the driver side exhaust manifold, but it is a wider motor

I assumed you would be building an all forged shortblock anyway. The 347 won't live past 550hp very long (weak block), main bearing cap support be damned. On the plus side, the 347 is narrower, giving you more room between the towers for big turbo piping.

yeah man, i think i'll stay away from anything wider, it was hard enough to put long tube headers on my 4.6, i had to jack the motor a few inches out of the car =P

I might go with an after market block anyways depending on the budget, but otherwise i'm just putting 4 bolt splayed caps on it and a girdle

No kidding, if i had to take it out there is NO WAY i am putting a mod motor back in, it's just too freaking big, and it weights 150lbs more than a 302 =P
Side note --> i'm also putting a 6 speed in with a double over drive so i get better gas mileage

Nice. I'd love to see you with an after market short deck aluminum block with twin turbos. SICK

You might also catch the all new BOSS302 block on ebay for a good price sometime.

I would love an aluminum block, but i don't know if i'll be able to afford one =P
Once i sell that chevy piece of crap (corvette) then i can start putting the engine together, but until then i'm just the kid in the candy store that doesn't have any money lol
