Think My A/C Compressor Is Gone ....

I was driving in the neighborhood, only like 15 mph or so and it sounded like I ran over a can or something, and then I heard a squalling type of noise, so I pulled over and it was coming from the front of the motor, so I headed back home, at the next light I smelt like a burning rubber or something like brakes you know. The car started to overheat, and then the air was blowing cold for a few seconds, and then hot for a few seconds, after several times I turned the a/c completely off.

Called a buddy of mine he said the compressor is probably bad, I was just wanting to check and see if anyone knew a way I could check to be sure without paying a mechanic to tell me this you know.

And also will the car overheat if I drive it if indeed the ac compressor is bad? I can do without the air for a little while if so.

if the compressor locked up then the burnt rubber was from the belt rubbin onthe locked up compressor pulley. start it up turn the ac on and see when the ac compressor slutch engauges of the pulley spins or not.

yea when i start the car and then turn the ac on it spins and everything for a few seconds, then it goes off, and within a minute it comes on for a few seconds, ETC,ETC.

Mine is going out/ went out too. that pretty much sumerizes what happend with mine. the compresor makes a ton of noise, right down to the smoke and burning smell. Looks like i get to head back to Dallas Mustang for another fix.

well even if you dont use the AC, the belt is still going to spin the compressorpulley and could ruin the bearings. Butyou could doa AC delete.

I've never replaced a compressor, I think you have to have special tools to take off the hoses. I got charged like 2-3 hours of labor for them to replace that, and all the other ac shit; at about 80 bucks an hour.

Yuppp.. and if you want a warranty on the compressor they'll make you buy the accumulator too.

UPDATE

got this problem fixed, it was my radiator condensor fan. it was all jacked up, put a new fan in, 300 bucks from ford, ouch. but he came with a lifetime warranty, drained the freon and put a few cans in, then changed the fuse, good to go now.
