AT to Manual swap

I probably should have searched for this first but I'm lazy and I wanna feel special.

I got a T45 from an 03 GT, along with flywheel, clutch with 60k on it. I also have the ECU from an 01 GT 5spd. I bought this from a friend for $400.

How hard is the swap? I know you have to buy the pedals, etc. and reflash ECU so there are no anti-theft issues. But other than that how difficult is the swap, and has anyone here ever done it?

Thanks for the input.

I saw that I was just hoping there was someone on here that had actually done the swap before and could tell me if it was worth it.

I've done the swap before on my 2000 GT. Ask Away.

It cost me around 2900 with A TR-3650 Tranny from A Mach 1. Also had a new shifter obviously, Tri-Axe.

what kind of ECM did you use? Also did you have to use a new wiring harness?

New wiring harness yes. There is a place called Bone Stock Racing in Florida, guy there. Very helpful.

(I'm from NJ, but Live in VA, so FL is way away from me)

By the way, it seems like a pain but it's worth it.

Yeah, you need a new bellhousing, wire harness, shifter, etc.

I swear, it's amazing.

I don't know about that, but if you get some nice gears (hmm... 3:73's, 4:10's?) and you're cruising on the highway, dropping it into third and flooring it sure has a nice feeling.... definitely can't do that with an automatic tranny!

Its not worth it. You need a new drive shaft, drive shaft loop, transmission crossmember, rear-end gear set-up, ECU, a dyno-tuning...I left a lot out I'm sure. I would'nt take apart a good Mustang to do this, if you're buying a wrecked car thats a different story...But your car won't last forever, and come time to sell you wont that money back. The only reason I could see for putting in a new transmission is if you're putting a new engine in with it. Nothing makes these cars depreciate faster than mileage.

Im changing the gears anyway, you dont need a new driveshaft or yoke, the tranny, clutch, flywheel cost me 400$, crossmember another $50. Pedals I got for $70 on ebay. I know it's a pain in the ass but my automatic tranny is going out anyway, I got metal shavings in the friggin pan. So the way I see it I pay 1400 for a rebuild or I can swap for around the same. Then when that one breaks it's cheaper to replace the TR3650 than the AOD.

Who told you you dont need a new driveshaft? Rear driveshafts for Mustangs are transmission-type specific...Im sure they can be modified but that would be a loss also. An AOD I think is longer because its set further back due to installation of the torque convertor, ergo the stock driveshaft you have would be too long. If Im wrong Im surprised but have you tried this yet?

Even if it turns out to be more expensive I agree with ya... since you're automatic tranny is going out anyway why not replace with a manual? Plus you can build it to whatever specs you want.

I have not done the swap yet, but I have a friend that has done two AT to manual swaps - one on a 01GT, and another on an 03GT. He said it is a surprisingly straightforward swap and it took him about 6hrs on both of them. He said the TR3650 will connect to the same yoke as the AOD tranny and wont require a new yoke or driveshaft. The hardest part of the whole thing is the pedals.

But we will see I will post and let you know exactly what it consists of. I will also try and take pictures every step since I will be doing this with my friend in my garage. Maybe it can help someone else do the swap.
