Nitto NT555's 245/45/R17 or 255's?

Well my Goodyear ZR45's are just about dead now. I got em on the rims that came with the car, I think they are the Cobra R replica wheels with the mustang centercaps. I am pretty sure they are between 8 and 8.5 inches wide.

I was thinking about getting 255/45/17's all around, but was worried if I went one size larger I might have problems. Its either that or would you recommend doing 245's all around but the NT555R's Extreme 245 in the back? So my options are 255's all around (NT555's) or 245's in the front and 245 NT555R's in the back... Suggestions?

It turns out I am only gonna have my car another 9-15 months, probably closer to 9ish. 03-04 Cobra coming soon!

Nitto's tend to run a bit on the narrow side, so would think that a 255 on an 8" wheel would be fine. I also recommend the same size all around and think the R's will give you some better traction for your mods.

Ok, so get NT555's in 255/45/17 or 255/40/17?

If i wind up getting radials in the back, it would be the 245/45/17's.

I would buy wider rims but it doesn't make any sense considering the car is going in a while.
(600 bucks saved towards down payment)

I wouldnt buy the Nittos..they suck ass.. I had the 555R and they dont hook worth a shit. Id put a set of BFG if its a daily driven car, if its a track car then put a set of M/T.
The Toyo Proxes arent bad either nor are the Kumho's for daily driven tires.

Need street tires. I'm just saying, I don't have more than 300 rwhp so they should work fine...

On the OTHER hand... The cobra I want to build is gonna have 600-650 rwhp with a KB / whipple. heheheh then I will need sick tires.

nitto 555s are junk. the best street tire that ive tried so far for the price is unquestionably the BFG G-Force Sport tire. they go for about $110 per tire on tire rack, they last long, and they grab great for a street tire. ive tried a bunch of different tires and these are without a doubt my favorite. pertaining to your question, i would just buy a tire that fits the rim. its stupid to try to put fatter tires on rims designed for something of a smaller size. 255 is much of a step up, but dont be one of those fools with 265s on stock sized wheels. tires that dont fit are tires that dont work. if you want widder tires buy wider rims.

Here's an idea...

The NEW NT05 Nitto 255/40/17 in the rears and the NT555's in the front 255/40/17? Im thinking the NT05's are gonna give me better traction than the NT555's for the drive wheels and I can save 70 bucks up front...

...Why not just get all the same tires so you can rotate.. The next owner is not going to want different tires on the fronts and backs anyways

Nitto NT555 (awesome for the street), they do run narrow but an 04 GT (like mine) is an 8" wheel not an 8.5" wheel so a 245/45/17 tire is fine, and i completely agree you should get them all the same size, not only for rotation purposes but for your buyer's sake as well

Well I hve zero complaints about my 555's except the 315's i have kinda suck in the rain being so wide. But fo everyday driving that work great. and I got a good deal on mine. but just my .02

... As I've heard the Nitto's run a little narrow... The 255's are ok to grab for these rims? Cornering hard isnt gonna send them ripping off?

I can spend like 6 bucks more per tire for the wider ones. I just don't know if it will work / fit properly.

My buddy has NT555's 245/45/R17 on his stock 17x8's and he autox races with me, so I don't think cornering hard is gonna send them off. He ran them all last season with no issues. They fit fine so IMO, go with the 245s not the 255s.

I'm upgrading to 18x9's this summer and I'm throwing on the 275/35/R18's (also to be used for autox).

Thanks everyone for the advice. Well at the track, the 555's will do a lot better than the Goodyear ZR45's that have 15% life on them left would do. If I heat them right I should be all set. When I get the Cobra ill do 305's maybe, 555R's or M/T's.

245/45/17
255/40/17

^ Hmmm... hehehehe

I don't really think I would see a difference in grip with these two.

EDIT: I think I'll run 245/45/17 up front and 255/40/17 in the back actually..
