I learn to drive in my parents 1988 VW Jetta. It was automatic. Then I drove my dad's Audi 90, which was also automatic. My first actual car I bought myself when I was 18 was a 1981 VW diesel Rabbit 4spd. It was in good condition, but it wasn't fast by no means. And in the winter, It had a hard time starting because of the diesel. I had this heater thing put into the motor with a switch installed. Anyhow, it was slow, but I could put $8 in gas and it would last me two weeks. I had that for 2 years. Actually most all of my cars I've owned since then have been MTX. I just prefer them. Now, when I get older and It starts to HURT to shift all the time, maybe I will go auto.

But until then, I love the manual. It makes me more aware of how fast I am going, and what I am doing.

Plus, chicks are more impressed with they see a stick in the middle.

Manual 5.5 1/4 mile 13.9
Auto 5.6 1/4 mile 14.0

Most of them do that but sometimes it could be different...

0-60 and 1/4 mile times for Factory Stock Vehicles

most of the times seem to be about a tenth slow, but its a great web page. it doesnt answer your question, but i thought id post it up anyways.

I have seen that 0-60 and 1/4 mile times website before but thanks for the thought. I think most of those times are in manual cars. I have never found anything that said what the 5spd vs automatic times were in the same car. Maybe they are very close and it is just the feeling of the 5spd that makes it seem faster.

Times don't have a big difference but automatic gts loose alot of hp to the wheels compared with a 5spd, and if you race one from a dig and they launch good they can let you too far....

Stock for stock a manual is faster. If an auto gets different gears etc, it catches up, but then so does the manual. A auto will usually win in a race with someone that is driving a manual poorly, but when you have someone that knows what they are doing, the manual will take em. Having said that, SUPER fast cars, 10s and below would probably do better with an auto because with those speeds, you hardly have time to shift. As far as fun factor goes, manual all the way. I have a younger acquaintance that has a auto GT that revs and pretends like it's a manual.. I always make fun of him for it. He's one of the guys that claim "I can take you because we have the same car, but my tranny can shift faster than you can!" His daddy bought him that car for graduation too. He has no clue about it. When I first met him he was leaving traction control on when he launched because he claimed it gave him better traction on the launch.... "That's what it's for man!"

Plus females are more impressed with manuals, and the stick reminds them of peni. Some even ask if they can touch it.

Then they ask if they can touch the shifter too.

there is one way to get a manual to shift faster...a short throw and well the person in away.

Autos have shift kits, tuners, etc. Much more tunable and track reliable.

and the girls comment. They like looks and somewhat speed. Shit less what shifts the car.

Rolls yes the manual will get the jump. The only thing that hurts the auto in stock form for the track in the launch. You cant launch as hard and get the 60ft time. a stall and shift kit take care of that.

Well this car is my summer car and I don't really ever plan on bringing it to the track too much so maybe I will wait until my motor or tranny goes and swap in a newer engine and 5spd tranny so it will be more fun on the streets. Or upgrade to a terminator cobra!

i ran a 14.2 w/ just an o/r x and cai and sct chip in my auto last year and a buddy with o/r x and cai ran 14.3 5spd both on street tires. i'm pretty sure i could of gotten a better time in his car than he did.

Um......you build an auto right and you will always get the power to the ground......I cut 1.56 60's all day with a 17 in rim and MT DR's...4000 stall, shift kit, and tranny cooler.....with 410's.....the stock auto 1st thru Drive can handle 700 hp from the factory....the O/D is the weak link but thats why you just hit the O/D button to off and have fun.........when built right the auto is a blast to drive......
